Bluetooth SIG Announces 1M Units Shipped... Per Week
So, as you already know, not all the PPCT editors agree on Bluetooth's future. :lol: I'm generally bullish on it, and my take has been we have to wait until it ramps up -- it took Wi-Fi years and years for it to become a hot consumer item (which of you were using Wi-Fi in 1991, back in the NCR WaveLAN days?), and the same challenge has existed for Bluetooth. But progress is being made.
"The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the trade association responsible for Bluetooth wireless technology, today announced that the short-range wireless technology has made its way into a record number of consumer products. For the first time ever, total Bluetooth product shipments worldwide exceeded one million units per week, in 3rd quarter 2003, according to Matthew Towers of IMS Research which operates a Bluetooth semiconductor volume tracking service."
I'm sure the "naysayers" will point out that far more electronic gadgets are shipped per week in general than the number that have Bluetooth. However, the fact of the matter is that it's continuing to ramp up. Now can someone beat down Verizon's and Sprint's door with this information, please? :roll:

Way to go Bluetooth! :multi: Tested my new Parrot Portable Hands Free unit (Bluetooth enabled) today. Took about 30 seconds to bond with my T68i and another 15 seconds to figure out how to voice dial my office. Now when I am in a rental car while traveling in North America or Canada I can make/receive calls safely and legally. Thank you Bluetooth :beer:

Also the 1.2 spec was Adopted by the SIG, they highlight these elements in the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 1.2:
- Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH)
- Enhanced Voice Processing
- Enhanced Quality of Service (QoS)
- Faster Connection Speed

This should get exponentially greater over time. Like the fax machine when it was first released, one BT device requires another to be useful. That's going to create a hockey stick like growth curve...even if some seem to be challenged by the BT gods. Happily, I've never had an issue with over a half dozen different BT enabled devices playing nice with each other automagically.

I have the full installation carkit and think that's great too. Here in the UK they're about to introduce stiff legislation against driving without a hands-free. I had one before - for my Nokia 9210 - but got really fed up with how much extra cash Nokia wanted each time I wanted to change phones :evil:
Now I have a BT carkit and it will work with any new BT phone and it's 100% voice activated as well!!!

I'm with you Janak. I still believe that Bluetooth has a bright future and I know that currently, it's an extremely valuable technology to me.
There are kinks to be worked out, but I still don't buy the widespread belief that WiFi will fully serve all the needs that Bluetooth currently (at least tries) to fulfill.

All the decisions the Bluetooth SIG makes are now being focused on their ' 5 Minute Ready Programme.' *
Some of the planned elements of the 1.2 version were left out because of a lack of maturity and more testing needed to be done.
Whats missing that was originally in 1.2 ? ( Draft 6 )
Absence Mask - The way a bluetooth device defines the period of time when a device will talk to another. An example being devices on a heavily-loaded network can be disconnected for a period of time to reduce loading than reconnected.
Scatter Mode - Concerns the way several small bluetooth networks send information between themselves. This update would improve/ enhance the way that this works.
Anonimity Mode - Would allow one to mask a device's address, meaning that people - or their bluetooth devices - could not read anothers device.
