Default Pocket SharpMT

http://www.randyrants.com/pocketsharpmt/

Here is good news for all those webloggers out there using Movable Type to run their blog. You can update your blog with a very nice offline tool called Pocket SharpMT. A few days ago, a new version 1.3 has been released.

This software gives you the entry screens you are used to in Movable Type, so you can write and edit your entry on your Pocket PC offline, and only connect to publish your posts. Pocket SharpMT needs the .NET Compact Framework to be installed on your Pocket PC. On my HP iPAQ h2210 running Windows Mobile 2003 Software for Pocket PC it installed and ran without me installing additional software, using the .NET Compact Framework that comes in ROM. The software is donationware, so if you like what you see, you can show that to the author.

Default Cursory review of Pocket SharpMT v1.3

I just posted a cursory review of Pocket SharpMT v1.3 over at my site. http://www.involvu.net/moveable/epicenter/. Stop by and have a look. This is a great tool. Kudos to Randy.

This could prove to be an invaluable tool. Up to this point the only role my PPC has served as a blogging tool was simply as a note taking/reminder tool. With this application I can now compose entries, or cull content on the go. Downloading now....

Off-topic: MovableType rocks! However I wish it were based on PHP rather than CGI/Perl, which is rather old school. :mecry:

Nice review.

This seems like such a great tool, but I'm hesitant to install it on my 1910 because of the extra memory the .net framework would take up.

Actually, it's not just offline. If you have a wireless card, you can post directly to your site with it.

True...but regardless of whether you are "offline" or "online", you are still composing the local draft on the local device. It doesn't get sent to the server until you post it. When you post it, you can specify whether the server post status should be publish or draft. Maybe I should have been clearer about that. Thanks for point it out.

Default I might switch

This looks nice... With more features than the software i currently use to update my blog from my pocket pc. The thing is i wrote the software to update my movable type blog myself and that makes me feel cool. Some knowledge of EVB and a lot of web skills and 3 hours later i had a fully functioning offline blog app. hehe I was so proud. I couldn't ever release it though since i had all the values like log in and such hard coded in my device. argg Anyways props to someone making a better program with more features that was coded the right way so anyone could use it.

This looks very exiting.

I'll try it out to-night, but damn i've lots of other work to take home with me, wonder which will get done.

Pity MovableType is not written in PHP though.

I've waited and waited for this and here it is!

I'm as happy as a pig in slop... I'll be donating as soon as I get home.

Thanks so much for pointing this out!

Thanks very much for the kind words! I sorta did this to see if it could work... I guess it's a success! Didn't know if it would make sense to have an app like this with limited input options, but I was reminded by a few people that there's external keyboards, the PPC phones with built keyboards, etc... more than just the onscreen input these days.

Anyway, sorry for requiring the .NET CF - it was something I did think a good deal about... but with it I was able to "pseudo-port" the desktop version of SharpMT to the PPC in days. Like 4 days, I think... besides, it comes built-in on the WM2003 devices, which helped me in the long run.

I was using a 1910 up until today - love the small sized device - and the CF did take a small piece of space, but I found it to be acceptable. I picked up a 1945 this afternoon thanks to an open box discount and WOW it's neat seeing the app in ClearType.

Thanks for all the support though!
