Default Toshiba Announces Recall Of Optional e740 High-Capacity Battery

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...jsp?soid=472930

Toshiba is recalling the optional high-capacity battery for the e740 series. "When using the optional high-capacity battery in your Toshiba Pocket PC e740, you may experience unexpected shutdowns, hard resets, or inability to turn on your PDA under normal use."

If you have one of these, check the serial number on the back of the battery. If it ends in "A" you are fine. If it doesn't end in the letter "A" you need to contact Toshiba at the phone number listed in the service notice. There is a picture at the Toshiba site to help you identify the serial number.

Update by Janak: If you're willing to take the aforementioned risk of a recall, PPCT reader Reza has discovered a great deal on Toshiba extended batteries.

It seems everyday I become more relieved that I didn't buy an e740. Toshiba has ensured with the e740 I'll never buy one of their PPCs!

In all fairness the e740 was a great pda (untill I killed it in a swimming pool... :bawl: )
I was really impressed when toshiba performed the recall on the device itself.. they couriered a new one out to me and did the swap there - that was great customer service.
Just bear in mind that most of the time you only hear the bad things about a pda.. and whilst the e740 was not without its flaws, I would gladly buy another toshiba device if I felt it appropriate. WMMV.

Wow! What a coincidence that Office Depot are putting these batteries on a massive sale! I just called Toshiba and despite the operators poor English and awfully strong Jamaican accent (no offense to our Jamaican friends, but why do companies so often appoint people who hardly speak English to their hotlines?) I managed to get 3 replacement batteries to be shipped to me overnight

Thanks to PPC Thoughts I called Toshiba, had no wait and a new battery will be shipped to me. As far as I am concerned that is pretty good service. I had an equally good experience when one of the battery pins sank into the case and the unit needed repair.

For what it is worth, the support agent said he was in Boston USA and had an accent but was good. He said that Toshiba is exploring to see if they can possibly upgrade the e-740's to PPC 2003. He said their problem is they built the e-740 to PPC 2002 specifications. As I recall, this was their first major PDA and I guess they were caught short when they had to make sure their latest models, with a different processor, would work with PPC 2003.

Anyway, I like my E-740 and I'll be largely happy even if it is never upgraded (provided they at least come through with the .23 ROM upgrade in the USA.

Well, I am gonna try to get mine replaced. However, I just tried to call them, and after 10 minutes of listening to that hold music, Neal came on to personally tell me that they are experiencing a high volume of calls, and ask me if I could please call back tomorrow or later tonight. :?

That seems just a little bit silly.
