Pocket MVP Now Works With Windows Mobile 2003
One of the most-used applications on my Pocket PCs has always been Pocket Music and Video Player (MVP), which was formerly known as Pocket DivX. It is an excellent program for watching video clips and listening to music files, especially since it has a great playlist feature. Plus, it's totally FREE!
That's why I was so disappointed when I tried to install it on my 2003 device and it kept crashing. Now, though, the developers at WinCESoft have successfully updated this for Windows Mobile 2003.
The new version doesn't really have any enhancements, aside from a very cool new skin that's included. But just in case you've forgotten, here are all the great features that it does include:
10-Band Equalizer with Pre-Amp PlayList Support PlayList Editor Web Streaming Brightness Control (ARM devices only) File Association Support Hardware Button Mapping Shuffle Play 90 degree Rotate 2:1 zoom Bi-linear filtering for zoom mode Dithering (ARM devices only) Fast Forward Seek Bar Volume Control Custom File Open Dialog Custom Web View Streaming File Selection Dialog Keep Alive for device shutoff suspension Play At File Open option Definable Caching for performance/power utilization
Supported Audio/Video Formats Video: Divx, OpenDivX, Avi, MPEG-1 w/ FFMPEG mpeg video decoder Audio: MP3 and Layer I + II Audio w/ MAD MP3 decoder
Note: When you click on link on the WinCESoft page for the Windows Mobile 2003 download, it may look like you end up on the page for the HPC version. Trust me; the download on this page is the one you want. You also should install Pocket MVP to internal memory for best operation.

Still quite a bit of refinement needed, I'm afraid.
Both of my attempts to play video failed. A Divx5.0.5/MPEG-3 file would only play audio and was accompanied by screen corruption. An .ASF file quit with "Load Error: Failed to load file, please check available memory". This was on a freshly rebooted 2215 with 32 megs of program memory available.
*sigh*

I'm still waiting for my WM 2003 update for my Loox, but untill then i wanna try this on my current OS PPC2002 (i had it on my HPC 2000 before, a HP720, and really liked it a lot).
But on the download page there are only versions for CE.NET 4.xx available and older HPC versions like for the HP720.... :?:
Does this mean that this is the latest version for ALL M$ operating systems with 240x320 screens ? So can i safely install this on a PPC 2002 ?

Don't forget it supports ogg audio as well. re: the divx 5.0.5 video failing, I have only had it work up to version 5.0.2 so I use this for all my Pocket PC encoding.

Can someone explain this to me? If I understand the Pocket PC correctly, when you start a program, it (or the part that's running) gets copied to program RAM. So no matter what, the program is running in device RAM anyway, right? (The alternative is that programs execute in place, and program memory is for things like stack and heap memory.)
If my assumption is correct, keeping the data file in RAM (if it fits) would be more beneficial than keeping the program in RAM.

All my current videos are coded to the DivX5.0.5 standard (with MP3 audio CODEC) and they work great on my HP2215.
If your videos are using any DivX Pro features though, they will fail... PocketMVP has only been built to take advantage of the standard DivX 5.0.5 features.

If you examine that download page a bit more closely, you'll see there's a download available for Windows Mobile 2003. It's also stated in the history.
From the original threads discussing this player on ProjectMayo boards, the goal of this player was WM2003 compatibility. There was never any mention of PPC2002 compatibility, so I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't work.

So did they get rid of a version for 2002 when they upgraded it to run on 2003?

I thought I'd give this a go but as it doesn't add anything useful to me I've removed it.
Sadly it has messed up my file associations!
I have managed to re-associate MP3 files with Media Player using Resco Explorer but the icon is not shown - can I easily fix this and the other associations?
I hate software that doesn't unistal cleanly

No. In fact, this new version is really from a different developer than the one who's been typically maintaining PocketMVP. There's been no collaboration between the two.
The original developer, Marc Dukette, has been on extended leave (several months) with no signs of returning. Thus, people were getting antsy about updates and then this version kind of appeared out of nowhere from a completely different developer. From what I understand, this app was actuall re-engineered significantly (though the interface remains exactly the same).
