HP iPAQ 5150 and 5550 Announced
Hmm, I thought we had gotten this before, but oh well... better late than never.
"Continuing to deliver expansion capabilities, the powerful and flexible HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5500 series is a Microsoft Windows Powered PC designed to meet your handheld computing need for enhanced fingerprint security and wireless connectivity both in and out of the office. Gain competitive advantage through increased mobile productivity that allows you to communicate, access, and manage information when you want. A broad range of applications, integrated wireless capabilities, enhanced security and expandability make the HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5500 series essential for you to be productive at home, at work or on the go."
The 5550 has a 400MHz PXA255 XScale, 128MB of RAM, integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a 3.8" transflective LCD, sleeve compatibility, and integrated biometrics. The 5150 has 64MB less RAM, no integrated Wi-Fi and no biometric reader for approximately $100 less. Interestingly, neither of them seem to have consumer IR (Nevo) -- perhaps HP believes that the 2200 covers the consumer niche and these don't need it?
From what we've heard, on the other hand, the 5550 does have a substantial software bundle, including F-Secure FileCrypto, iPresenter, Jeode, MobiMate WorldMate, Resco File Explorer 2003, WestTek ClearVue Suite, and a bunch of other applications, which is cool. It's not clear how the 5150's bundle is different, just yet.
Pics of the 5550 and the 5150 are attached. (If you want to see hi-res pics of any of the iPAQs, check out the full HP press release page. And when I say hi-res, I'm talking 4MB+ JPEG files. 8O)

Do you mean the Nevo software is not bundled anymore or that the IR hardware has been downgraded?

Now thwt you mention it, the 5550 looks kinda like a four-eyed (no reference to glasses) character from a children's book.

Whups my bad!
I thought the 5550 was a 2002 device. Guess I was wrong! Great! This is what I am gunna get! Whoohoo! Like I said in a earlier thread..GPS ain't hugely important and I can live with out it for a while. Toshiba can go jump off a bridge. I mean the e740 is barely a year old! I mean that in saying I need to procure a CF to serial card for my Garmin. I ain't buying the sleeve or the BT GPS until it drops substantially.

Good question. I've seen various spec sheets, and none of them mention anything about consumer IR. It's possible the hardware is still there, just the software is missing, but your guess is as good as mine.

I don't know, I kinda like the 5150's look. The 5550, just like its predecessor, looks like it has a nose and a mustache.

Still isn't a one piece device. No phone, no sell.
