PocketPCSoft.net Redesigned
Greg Hilton of PocketPCSoft.net has just announced that PocketPCSoft.net has been professionally redesigned, by Debbie McCormick of Pocket McDeb. If you haven't seen this site, go and visit it. It looks great. The layout is nice and clean, and it looks like everything is easy to find. The first thing I noticed is the number of software categories - everything from Aviation to Utilities, each with a distinctive, well-designed icon. There's also a news column, as well as other features including tips and reviews. It also has mobile versions, including channels for Mazingo and AvantGo.

Looks like it's up now. This new look is much improved but it's designed for 1024 x 768 full screen browsing, which is a bit much IMO - I run at 1280 x 1024, but rarely have the browser window full-scren.

I have to agree with you on this, 1024x768 is rather large for the average person.
The new look is very nice. :way to go:

Fantastic improvement upon the old version! Very neat design too...
Still seems a bit slow though, and the search facility could be improved. I noticed that the search field on the front page doesn't work properly (use it and it lists everything in the database - need to reenter your terms into the box on the results page), and the use of large tables mean you get all or nothing until the page has finished loading...
Apart from that, excellent job

thanks for the comments guys, I thought I'd fixed that search engine bug, obviously not, guess what I'm doing next then
I'll speak to Debbie re the 1024 size thing.
What php errors did people see? I've just moved onto a new server to try and prevent overloads I saw on the old one
re speed I'll knock the amount of friends icons down to 4 and see if that helps at all, as each one makes a php/sql call.
regards
Greg

Hi folks. Although it was nice of Greg (and Crystal) to refer to PocketPCSoft.net as being "professionally redesigned" I don't consider myself a professional at this yet. Just something I do on the side and I'm still learning every day.
As for the width of the page, I agonized over that decision when designing it, and now I'll take a closer look at the choice I made. Other widths just scrunched the content and design too much. But, I'll play with it some and see what we can do.
I appreciate the feedback.

ok that's search fixed, and reduced the friends buttons which decreases the php calls which fingers crossed may speed it up!
thanks for the feedback all, let me know if you see any other problems!
Regards,
Greg

It wasn't a PHP error that I saw. It was too many connections to the MySQL Database. It was a little early in the morning, otherwise I would have paid more attention. (and maybe written it down.)
