Default National Moment of Remembrance

http://www.menc.org/guides/remember/onthisday.html

If you're living in a part of the world that observes Memorial Day on Monday, May 26, here is something that might make your remembrance a little more meaningful.

"The National Association for Music Education is partnering with The White House Commission on Remembrance to promote the National Moment of Remembrance and the new Memorial Day anthem, 'On This Day.' Americans worldwide are asked to pause at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day (May 26) as an act of national unity, remembrance, and rededication to the ideals upon which our nation was founded."

If you would like to download and/or listen to the new anthem or read the lyrics, you can do so here.

Whether or not we as individuals support military service, I think it's important to pause in thanks to those who have given their lives for the sake of our freedom. I really like the new anthem and hope it becomes part of our remembrance tradition.

Thanks Brad. I wish the media would make more noise about something about these kinds of things. Regardless of whether our US residents (citizens or not) were for or against our recent activities, I think we should be thankful for the opportunities & freedoms that we have, which were made possible by those men/women who, throughout our young history, have willingly sacrificed their lives for those freedoms.

That's the worst attempt at an anthem I have ever heard. Sounds like a cross between Bette Midler singing "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and one of the people who lost in the tryouts for American Idol. AAAUuuuuugh... make it stop!!! ukeface:

I know that this post will be unpopular, but I enjoy this site as an international forum and unless recognition of all member nations' holidays are going to be posted, let's please keep the US myopia out of here and stick to technology related posts?

If recognition of war dead is going to be posted then why not stick to the yearly and (at least for 'Western culture') more globally recognised date of November 11? That's international, while Memorial Day is a US localised event to mark that nation's internal battles.

Please, keep news blurbs on sites like this more internationally inclusive rather than a non-tech-related political rah-rah for your home team.

If the poster is a US poster, there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to post something "US-centric" on this forum. It's certainly not myopic to do so. Since when do you make the rules, anyway? We have lots of posts on this site about Japan-only technology items, and I've seen other posts celebrating or at least noting other international or US-based events. If you don't like an off-topic post, don't read it. I personally appreciated seeing the post. I guess my vote off-sets yours. So again,.

Oh, and in closing,.

Unreal32, is it too much to ask for an understanding and desire to keep localised political topics that have ZERO relation to technology off of the news page?

Unreal32, you're wrong on a couple of points as the referred posting was a NEWS item and not specifically forum related. Further, what forum on this suite is suitable to such a topic? None that I'm aware of.

I respect Brian Adrian's intentions, but I will repeat that they I feel them to be misplaced here.

Brian must be instructed that the USA is the only nation that I'm aware of having a national holiday to memorialise its dead from its civil war.

Would anyone here expect a news blurb on a British based tech site to memorlise US dead from its domestic warfare beginning over a century ago? I certainly wouldn't. Let's be inclusive rather than exclusive and please keep away from the localised and non-tech related political commentary and posts.

I will repeat that I enjoy this site and view it as international in nature rather than delivering rah-rah localisism for nationalistic propoganda.

Keystone, your post reminds me of a t-shirt. "Life is **insert something trivial**. The rest is just details.

First. This post was not a news post. This site is not a NEWS only site (read the banner).

Second. Does this site have "member nations"? Did you mean member's national holidays? If you do, you should take the time to complete a profile, otherwise no one can know what nations our membership represents.

Last. When did it become so unpopular to rah-rah for the home team?

I believe that it is off-topic posts like this, and this, and this that make this site a community, not just a place to get information.

Thanks Brad!

Wonderfully written post to which I most heartily agree.
Thanks for taking the time to post a response.

Keystone,
In case you didn't know, you have the ability to filter out "OFF-TOPIC" thoughts when you visit the PPCT frontpage. You may want to excercise that right instead of asking the administrators to modify what they post.
