iPAQ h5400 Series Battery Advisory Posted
Are you having battery drain problems on your iPAQ 5450 when swapping batteries? If so, check this advisory out for workarounds.
"The iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Series may rapidly consume battery power after removing and replacing the battery pack. When your battery pack is removed from the device, the unit will enter a 'memory retention' mode and draw power from the bridge battery to keep data and programs in RAM. When you reconnect a battery to the iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 Series, the device will remain in 'memory retention' mode, yet the power consumption will be from the main battery at a high rate. If this situation is experienced, a fully charged (100%) battery may completely drain within 48 hours, resulting in an untimely loss of your data and programs stored in RAM."

:roll: So many problems with the 5450 (WLAN, driver memory, battery, volume). Lets hope they just say "Sod it! We'll give them PocketPC 2003 right away and solve all these issues in one go." Yeah I know... but I can dream, can't I?

:twisted: Hold on a sec. Their advisory says to perform a soft reset after swapping the battery. My 5400 ALWAYS does a reset after swapping the battery....by ITSELF!

Further proof that the soft reset button was always supposed to be the real on/off switch for the iPAQ. :evil:

Actually, performing a soft-reset while the battery is out performs a battery meter refresh.

Battery or Not?
:cry: My first issue with my h5455 was after getting the Extended battery. I've had 6 hard resets, lockups. Never had one with this unit before. Now...I wonder why? Related or Not? Stated: "Fingerprint reader software couldn't be loaded, normal reset unit"..... but soft reset just returned the same message, only a repeat of the message. Hard resets resolved.... but returned... NOT changing the battery for last few days... saw no return of the error!

A Matter Of Tolerance
I really had high hopes for the 5400 series, but the battery issues are what made me dump it. I can tolerate the soft resets (I use a utility for that ritualistic chore), but battery life is what I cherish most. I have a 3975 I carry with a Krussel/Whitney Compact Flash case with a 256meg SD card and a 1gig Sandisk CF card and use it HARD on a daily basis and it has never dipped below 60% battery life. What is even more amazing is the 3975 my friend gave me to load for him, which has been sitting on my desk for 3 weeks and is still at 51% (he is a little flaky and has not returned for it). I no longer worry about Battery life with my 3975, it is a downright power miser!

Hmm interesting. Thats not what their advisory says to do. It says to either power on the unit or perform a soft-reset AFTER swapping the battery. My point is...any time I pull out the main battery...upon replacing it, the unit does a soft reset...no button pushing needed.

Just a thought......
If removing the battery, starts an accelerated deline in the battery power, for the reasons stated, how many of us have done 'just that', to restart the Wi-Fi, before and after the updates for Wi-Fi? :?
