Handhelds In Battle
http://www.gcn.com/vol1_no1/daily-updates/21497-1.html
I am sure Tacfire is in here somewhere.
"Troops on the ground in Iraq are using ruggedized portable PCs and personal digital assistants to support operational and logistical applications. "Equipped with a Global Positioning System receiver and a tactical military modem, and coupled with a laser range finder, PCs and PDAs can be used to transmit firing coordinates to artillery on the ground or to aircraft overhead. They supply maps and personnel information for medical evacuations and carry maintenance manuals for military vehicles."
Right now, many of these devices are PC based with 500MHz Pentium processors, etc. However, the R-PDA based on the iPAQ is gaining popularity among soldiers.
Its basically a Compaq iPaq on steroids, Tallahassee spokesman Jim English said. Its becoming the platform of choice because of the convenience. The ruggedized PDA can fit in the cargo pocket of a military uniform and has nearly twice the battery life of the larger 31A, without any boot-up or shutdown time. The Tacter RPDA has been adopted for the Armys Commanders Digital Assistant and the Pocket Forward Entry Device for fire control."
Wouldn't it be cool if we could email those guys some patriotic and spirit lifting Today themes?

Sadly, if we could e-mail them such patriotic messages, etc. then we'd see a follow-up headline about troops receiving SPAM in the desert... :|

Yes it would Ed. I've changed my Today theme to an American flag theme to stay there until the war is resolved.

With those sand storms over there, I sure do hope the "dust under the screen" thing is solved. This should be a real test of it. Not that I've had any dust since my 36xx, but it just came to mind as I watch yesterday's reports on that wicked sand. I thought the wind sucked here in the city...That's nothing.

I've taken the opposite approach and tried to ignore the war because what I do has no bearing over the outcome of the war. Also, it seems to me that our soldiers in Iraq are there because that's the carreer they have chosen.
The intent of this post isn't anti-patriotism nor flame baiting. It's simply my view on the current circumstances. Feel free to express yours.

Uhm... no. THis isn't the place for it. If you want to do that, create an off topic thread in the OT forum. Thanks.
