Dell Storms Into PDA Market
Silicon.com talked to Michael Dell, and this interesting nugget came out of their conversation.
"After less than three months selling its own-brand handheld computers, Dell may have claimed over 10 per cent market share in the US."
I hope we can see official numbers reflecting Dell's sales soon...

I'd like to see those numbers also... I find 10% to be a little hard to believe...

That's clearly a bit vague. It wouldn't surprise me to see that they sold 10% of the handhelds sold in the quarter though. Based on the number of posts I see here and in the newsgroups there's a lot more than 10% of the people talking about the Axim.

Operative words
'may' jave claimed over 10 percent
'quarter' - the period referring to the percentage market share. That has to mean share of devices sold.
That is still, a huge success for Dell coming from nowhere.

No matter what the number may actually be, it is good that Dell is pushing PocketPCs.

The X5 400mhz is next on my shopping list, but I have to recover from my Maestro purchase first. :-) The X5 series is a winner for sure, after looking at several other's, they have the expansion and power I want and need so Im done looking. Now, to play the money game to get one. :-)

A huge success for Dell perhaps, but not necessarily a success for PPC if Dell's share of the market came at a cost to HP and Toshiba. But I seriously doubt Axim captured anywhere near 10% of the market, especially considering they are in short supply. I think Mike's statement was just posturing. Unless he was referring to the PPC market, and not the handheld market as a whole.

I'm only recently a Dell convert. Is this a Michael Dell quality? Is he the Wintel industry's version of Steve Jobs?

I forget, which type of PDA did you use before buying a Dell again?
Seriously, I think Dell made some serious in roads and I also think it was largely at the PalmOS's expense (simply because of the price). That said, 10% of the total PDA market share in three months...I don't think so.
Maybe he means 10% of sales in those three months?

What does that have to do with the price of beans in China?
