Default Dell Axim Cued Up for Feb. 2003 Release in UK

Pocket PC Thoughts reader PDA Gerbil scrounged up some information that those of you in the UK will be interested in:

"The latest issue of PCPro reviews the Dell Axim X5 (and it recommends it). Unfortunately they only release the print issue onto the web several weeks after the print issue comes out. It is in issue 100, February 2003. They say that Dell will release the X5 in the UK on the 3rd of February and the 400Mhz version will be 235 and the 300Mhz will be around 160."

Well at least the 5450 is available for sale now in the UK, only 4 days delay if you compare it to the US availability. The official UK site will have it in 2 weeks but expansys.com already has it in stock(only 90-100)

Well it seems that the no-Pocket-PC days will be over for me on monday.

Yes, the same issue of PCPro (February, issue 100) reviews the H5450. They quite like it, but take issue with the price, 649 ($1006)!!!!

So, hmmm 235 or 649. :?: Hmmm, now whatever shall I do?

you cant really just convert $ in and think that we are being riped off in the UK. Things cost less in the US and that is why the diference in Price, you will find that in anything you compare.

well i am getting the H5450 coz i did not want to buy anything bigger than my ex H3850 and i want something with bluetooth and wifi.

depend on what you want to do with your Pocket PC, most palm users that are thinking to move in the pocket PC scean will live the iPaq 1910, others that had an ipaq with expansion to use CF cards will love the Dell and will save money and other lunetics like me who want all wirelees and are iPaq lovers will go H5450.

oh forgot change the 649 and make it 617(expansys price)

I was not commenting on the UK versus US prices, but on the IPAQ versus the Dell, but if you want me to...

Ummm, that the whole point!!!! We are getting charged too much for a wide range of things. The "Rip-off-Britain" campaign makes some very true and valid points. For example, nearly identical cars cost thousands of pounds less in mainland Europe. OK, compared to the US we have VAT (value added tax on goods at 17.5%) but there is a lot of tax to pay in Europe, where things are cheaper. We are being systematically overcharged left, right and centre!

Fair point. But it's STILL too much for not enough. :? The Dell is FAR better value and the IPAQ really needs to drop drastically in value.[/quote]

Default Expansys - beware

I am not terribly impressed with Expansys.

Rang them and they said they had five units which were unreserved this morning, sounds like a selling trick.

They probably have some 5450s from the US which might not have the same warranty as units bought here (UK).

They have a poor customer service, I asked them about the Targus Stowaway keyboard (the website site says they have some in stick) but the lady on the phone said she could not guarantee sending one out.

Dell leaves IPAQ in the dust for value, but there is no bluetooth, WiFi add ons and Targus keyboard!!! (Eseential for me as the only Arabic OS support is for a Targus keyboard).

UK is definitely rip off.

QUESTION...
Will the Ipaq with the GPS have bluetooth built in? Any ideas?

Thanks

Taqi

Hi Taqi and welcome to the family.

I have ordered several thing from Expansys in the past and have had no problems personally.

The Dell does have an external keyboard coming. Give it time as well - as soon as Dell is shifting bucket loads the add-on manufacturers will fall over themselves to support it.

i am an expansys customer and i gurantee you that they have a very good service, i called them many times and did email them many times as well and they were very very helpfull.

i remember the fist time i used them was one year ago when the h3850 was out, i was in cyprus and i wanted to order the ipaq and have it delivered to the uk so my brother could send it to me (i did not know by that time that they could ship internationally). When i called expansys without even asking the man proposed me to have it send by them directly to cyprus and he even ca lculated the money i was going to save by doing that. in 3 days ipaq was with me via fedex.

About the stock, yes its moving very fast since they ship all over Europe, and even anywhere else. A week ago they had 30 256Mb SD cards now that i want one they are sold at least they get stock fairly quick 2-3 days which is not bad at all. Having sold almost all thier h5450 stock seems logical since it apears in the top of expansys top 10 bestselles

To give Expansys their due - yes they have imported the 5450 from the US - doesn't matter. The EU warranty of two years is guarranteed via Expansys anyway - then there is the fact that the iPAQ warranty from HP is an international one...

Buy from Expansys for 617 if you wish it now. Wait until January if you want it for 600 or less from various sources. Buy it through your company and you can have it for 575 (www.grouptrade.co.uk).

My experiences with Expansys are pretty good. When they don't have items in stock, their expected date of arrival is nothing more than an estimate, and you can't count on that, but they are pretty good in delivering things they do have in stock. And I agree with Duncan: it doesn't matter if they're imported units or not, they will be covered by standard warranty. And I agree with Duncan again: after a while you should be able to get better prices for the 5450 than the current Expansys price.
