Default Thoughts Climbs the Ranks

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...F-8&q=pocket+pc

I'm probably just asking for it by even mentioning this, but it's a momentus day for Thoughts: Google did an update of their index, and we moved from #4 to #3 for the term "pocket pc". Why is this a big deal? Well, the rankings have stayed the same for months on end: Microsoft's Pocket PC site, Pocket PC Magazine, Pocket PC Thoughts, Pocket PC Passion, and so on. After the shuffle, Pocket PC Magazine is now #1 and #2, and we're #3. And Microsoft's site is #4. Ya know I love you PocketPC.com, but woo-hoo! You can click the image below for a larger version if Google decides to play a cruel trick on me...

We also managed to make it to #2 in Google's Directory as well, which is pretty cool.

Ok, so maybe I'm just bored tonight. I've shovelled the snow off our driveway four times since yesterday morning... 8O At least our server has stayed up for 17 hours straight. Now if only Rackshack would hurry up with that memory upgrade...

Hmm, maybe Google ranking is inverse to the number of server crashes

Ooof. I hate having to shovel. We might have to on Thursday, there's a storm coming nearby... my city buddies keep on saying, "bring on the snow!" -- I want to smack them.

Congrats, Jason, that's really cool!

Now, can you send some of that snow down to the western US? We'd like to have water in the lakes next year ... for that, I'll shovel.

Default google listing

How does google rank who is top? It's great that PPT is getting the recognition. But what did jason mean when he said "google did an update on their index"?

thanks and congratulations.

That's one of their biggest trade secrets: their PageRank technology. Google basically ranks pages according to how many sites they're linked FROM (but the nitty-gritty is secret).

Google performs a crawl of the web and updates its search info every so often. "So often" might be daily, weekly, or monthly -- I don't know how often Google does, probably some combination of the above.

So we should all link to PocketPC Thoughts from our own personal pages?

Yes, but it'll only make a difference if our pages are highly-ranked...

Maybe getting PPC Thoughts Slashdotted or blogged elsewhere will do the trick. Don't know if that would be a good thing, though.
