CF power consumption
:?: I've a question regarding CF sizes & power consumption.
In the past, I had heard some people mentioned that the bigger the CF's capacity, the more power it needs (all other things being equal of course). Is that true? If that's true, it probably should mainly affect standby bty-life, as in the device providing minute amt of power to recognize the full CF during standby mode. So the larger its capacity, the more power needed?
The typical PPC app also usu scanned thru the filesystem for files registered with the app. Will having a large-capacity CF card increase the startup times of apps?
My largest cards are used with my digicam, coz when powered off, the camera doesn't provide any power to the card.

Another question: It seems as though I read someplace that 256MB Compact Flash (and larger, maybe) is inherently faster than smaller size modules, due to chip archetecture or something. Does anyone know anything about this? Can't recall where I saw it mentioned.
I have a mix of smaller modules across several brands, none of it rated for speed, all the cheapest I could get at the time (no Mr. Flash, though), and I found that my 256MB module was much faster doing 20MB of Mazingo in a USB reader/writer. I know, in a PDA it would be harder to notice a difference.
Just curious ...

When it comes to use in a Pocket PC, CF card speeds are a null issue - no PPC can keep up the max speed of a CF card. High-end pro digital cameras, yes, but not Pocket PC...I've done testing on a variety of cards using a USB CF card reader and the speed differences were negligable.

I don't know if size matters :-) when it comes to Compact Flash speed, but Digital Photography Review did a review on CF speeds in October 2001.
While what Jason said is probably true of PDAs and CF cards, it may not be true of SD cards. I've heard SD cards under 256 MB only transfer at 1 MBps (I think it was bytes, not bits), 256 MB and 512 MB cards at 5 MBps, and 1 GB cards will do 10 MBps.

I concur with what Steve said. For SD cards, the newer, higher-capacity cards really do make a difference. 512 MB cards are supposed to do up 10 MBps. Future 1GB cards, according to the SD Assoc., are supposed to be able to go up till 20 MBps. These are theoretical limits of course.
Still, I hope somebody can answer my question posted above regarding CF power consumption. Thanks!

They seem to have lowered the price to $131.44 (after the rebate). If the coupon code is still valid, that's now $126.44.
Figures -- I just got mine at $195 or so (before the rebate and coupon). :-(
