Default Fantastic Findings

http://news.com.com/2100-1040-963480.html?tag=fd_top

Friend Foo Fighter finds fine findings! Firm facts? Fiction? Foon fee'll fee! Maybe I won't have to eat my hat, maybe I will.

"Dell Computer Chief Executive Michael Dell said Monday the company would launch a personal digital assistant (PDA) in the United States soon but saw limited near-term growth opportunities in that market. "It's not nearly at the strategic importance for us of servers and storage or services, but it is a developing market--a relatively small market today," the head of the world's largest personal computer vendor told a news conference in Tokyo. "There are many different competing standards but we do see some momentum in the (Microsoft) Pocket PC standard, and if you stay tuned in the press I think you'll see some announcements coming from Dell fairly soon, at least in the United States."

Well, this is certainly good news! If there's ever been a reason to be optimistic that quality will improve and prices will head down, this is it. Sure the market is, according to Dell, "small" but when you put players like HP against Dell, it doesn't matter -- consumers win.

I can't wait to see the "official" news... that' we've probably already read about.. but it will be interesting to see what happens to Toshiba, HP, et. al., when rumors become reality.

Interesting comment on their view of the future too.

Only Dell could call a $200 million investment small potatoes.

Yes, I think they're dead on with it too. Honestly, the more I think of it the more I believe that for enterprise use, PDAs NEED to be wireless and not WiFi but on Cell. Phone networks.

Not to say they don't have their uses now, but it takes a lot (trust me I know) to justify a PDA purchase to you're CFO and "you can't check you're e-mail on it" just doesn't fly to well.

Well, both WiFi and cellphone capabilities would be nice.

But seriously, integrated wireless is surely as inevitable as the transition of laptop screens from mono to colour was. After all, there comes a point when including a feature probably costs a manufacturer less than the harm done to sales if said feature is not included.
