Default New Site for Mobile Gaming

http://www.handango.com/wgr/

Handango and Wireless Gaming Review, have just launched a mobile software store for games for phones and handhelds. I could not resist taking the first snapshot of Number of Downloads by Platform. I pulled down the number of downloads from the top ten list by platform and summed it all up. I made the following chart from those numbers.

I find it interesting to see that even The Most Downloaded Game is a Pocket PC game. It'll be fun to continue to compare these numbers!

"The Wireless Gaming Review Software Store is one of the first sites on the Web to offer applications for Java-enabled phones. The storefront is built on Handango's market-leading application management and provisioning platform, Handango AMPP. "The Wireless Gaming Review Software Store provides hundreds of games for phones and handhelds running Java(TM), Symbian OS, Palm OS(R), Pocket PC, Windows CE(R) and BlackBerry. The storefront includes new favorites in addition to classic games like Tomb Raider, Scrabble, SimCity and Bejeweled. "Wireless Gaming Review is an amazing source of mobile gaming insight and market analysis with a tremendous reputation in wireless and gaming circles," said Laura Rippy, chief executive officer of Handango. "We are thrilled they have chosen Handango AMPP to provide mobile gaming applications to their users."

I wonder if this means Handango will offer direct downloads to the device now - I remember seeing a demo of this many months ago, but I don't know that it's possible to go to Handango today, order something, and have it install onto your device over the air.

thats been live for ages

ota.handango.com if i recall correctly

problem: microsoft only added compression to the cab file format very recently, and pocket pc's dont support it. hence all the ota downloads for pocket pc are larger than they might otherwise be

Yes, you're right that size is a killer on most wireless connections, but it's a start. And I think the initiative is great! I just wish that all software providers were required (or at least pushed) to put the CAB online too. There are too many great products missing at the moment.
