Default Optimize web sites with Dcipher from greenlight Wireless

http://www.greenlightwireless.net/dcipher.asp

Proxy-based dynamic reformatting of web sites for mobile devices is still a popular field to be in it seems - I remember being at CES last year and seeing no less than six companies offering services in this area. The latest is called Dcipher:

"Do you own a web site? Are you interested in reaching the rapidly growing number of wireless web users? Dcipher service integrates seamlessly into your existing web site, automatically detecting wireless visitors and optimizing your content for their browsers...When Dcipher detects a wireless handheld visitor, it dynamically reformats your web site in a way that optimizes it for use on a small-display device, then sends the revised page to the wireless visitor. The Dcipher Toolbar is added to the top and bottom of the reformatted page, allowing the user to view the page in PDA View, Text-only View and Standard View (which disables Dcipher)."

They have an interesting demo that you can look at, but I didn't find myself being particularly impressed at the intelligence of how it reformatted the page. Interesting technology, and it seems very easy to implement (a single line of code on the page), but the pricing structure is out of reach for all but the big boys - $39.99 US for 2000 transactions. Still, if you have a low-traffic commercial web site that you think mobile device users would want to access, this may be a good solution for you.

UPDATE: I've removed the link to our site because apparently the URL isn't "live" and there was no dynamic reformatting occurring.

Default our site link

actually your "our site" link is correct that it doesn't change anything, because it doesn't. that demo doesn't render the webpage on the fly, it just goes to a mock up. The url variable you changed just makes it go to another website for the skin. anyhow.....<comment out, it was mean>...

So I was thinking, a while ago about this problem. The best solution would be some sort of filter, where the filters are made by users. All filters will be published online and rated. The highest rated ones will be defaultly used. It will be a filter community. Everyone will help everyone make a collection of filters. It will be like a p2p/ebay like community effort.

Should be easy to program, just needs some time. You can use "screen scraping" APIs. The only problem is the use of a centralized server. Some will have to support that. The best solution for that is for someone to do it as a college research thing and have it on a college network for free hosting. :P

Take it easy,
Ryan

Default Response from Greenlight Wireless -- See for yourself

Jason,

Please understand that you can't simply replace the url parameter on our demo to see an accurate representation of our service. We'd ask that you please remove the link because it does not represent what our software does.

If you would like to see what your site looks like using Dcipher, please contact us and we'd be happy to set you up with a free trial.

Regards,

Kevin Perkins

What are the other options to have your website translated for PocektPCs.
My own website www.gpsassion.com mainly discusses GPS solutions for Pocket PCs so it would be a nice option to have

PS - Just noticed that the background texture looks gorgeous BTW on the 3970 ;-)
