Default I-O Data announced 256 and 512 MB SD cards

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0207/02070801iodata256512sd.asp

It's good to see more OEMs making SD cards - competition will help drive the cost down. Although after learning that the SD spec is controlled by a single company who charges royalties on it, I wonder how much competition is really possible. If MultiMediaCards weren't so darn slow, and weren't lagging in capacity, they'd seem to be a much better solution. But as consumers, it seems that we can never win...

"I-O Data has today announced the availability of 256 and 512 MB SD cards. The SD card is now beginning to establish itself in the digital camera market, the advent and availability of larger capacity cards will be very welcome to owners of SD/MMC storage cameras. Another positive aspect of the new cards is that there appear to be no known compatibility problems, so unlike the SmartMedia debacle of a few years ago existing SD/MMC digital cameras should be able to use these new cards without problems."

Which company controls the SD spec?

Thanks,

I just got a 128mb SD card for my e310, and so far it's plenty enough. Not sure if I need something with that much memory, but I'd imagine that a year from now i'll be eating my words!

Though it seems that most companies are investing in mutiple expansions for their devices. So though as consumers we can't win with MMC/SD being controled, by having devices with these multiple expansions, manufactures are almost forcing the various expansions to compete.
