Default Intersil to release 802.11b SD card

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=73&e=4&cid=73&u=/zd/20020710/tc_zd/942655

"The wireless equipment maker announced on Tuesday that it is working with SyChip to incorporate 802.11b wireless networking technology into a Secure Digital (SD) card for handheld devices." Don't look for anything this year though. I would guess first quarter of next year before you could order one.

Intersil is also working to reduce the power requirements of 802.11b. Right now, those requirements are pretty hefty and can drain most Pocket PC's in an hour or so. Source: JonnoB

Caveat Emptor. the SD slot in the Pocket PCs can not keep up with 11 megabits. It's rated at 2 megabits so be careful if you are considering this as an option. Also, be aware that not all SD slots are SDIO compatible!

In theory a slot can be 10 megabits however the Pocket PC vendors would have to support 4 SD address lines instead of 1 in hardware.

So this would also play into the Bluetooth 2.0 spec. If we get Bluetooth SD cards that run up to 12 megabits, we will really only get 2 megabits of through put? Sounds like hardware manufatures need to do a little upgrade in their next gen. devices.

Default Gushing river and shot glasses

Beyond the I/O capacity of the sd slot one must consider your ability to process data.

Exactly WHAT?? are you going to do with a 10 MegBit/sec connection on a PocketPC. Transferring data at that rate you'll either run out of memory or overwhelm your processing capacity.

BTW, desspite recent software releases, PocketPC is a server non-starter. No web hosting or FTP serving on PocketPC.

CedeFTP has an FTP server for Pocket PCs - posted here last week by Andy. There are web servers too.

The 206MHz StrongARM can easily keep up with a 10MB connection. Depends on what the data stream is as to whether or not it can keep up processing that data. Would be good for video or cd-quality audio.
