Google on your Pocket PC
http://www.google.com/ie
Google has a new page that seems to be for Pocket PC users. <!>
They have had the www.google.com/palm link for a while which works great on Pocket PC's too, but this new one has some cool things, like color!
Just an FYI - Amazon has one too at www.amazon.com/pocketpc. Too bad they don't sniff for the browser and take you there automatically.

This is hard to find at the google site but it's my favorite feature.
This page you're describing was actually set up to be a replacement for the side search window in internet explorer. Go to
http://www.google.com/options/defaults.html
and search for "Download this file to make Google the default search engine for Internet Explorer"
click on it and the side search window will be google'd.
It's a great page for Pocket PC but you're missing out if you're not using this feature on your desktop.

Ah! That explains it! So it isn't the PPC optimized version but a general IE hack... Okay, but nice that it also works so briliant on the PPC. :-)
BTW: I'm using the Google Toolbar and love it!

sniff for PocketIE
> Too bad they don't sniff for the browser
 My bank has this exact problem. Their SSL secure site worked when PPC first arrived, but later they decided to make it "better". Although my PPC2002 iPAQ has the necessary SSL security capability, it doesn't understand their new JavaScripting, starting with their 'Login' button. After hunting around on the phone for a while, a tech was able to tell me of an alternate URL that did simple banking--it worked, but only gave a subset of the features the regular site had. Again after more phone time I was given an URL that had a simple interface, but gave access to the full feature set the bank offers online, but it choked on the agent string. So after I did the registry hack to fake the web server that I was using a desktop browser, everything worked.
Its really stupid when they design a simple site specifically for wireless handhelds, and don't bother to research what handhelds and what software is popular these days. One simple change and I wouldn't have to hack my registry (which I'm not affraid to do, but prefer not to because in general its a shaky thing to do, but also if a website *does* understand the original PPC agent string, I won't get their PPC content!).

By the "ie" in the link it looks like the search page for Internet Explorers search bar. Makes me think there will be many other search engines that have pages for PIE, as the search bar is about the right width.

I think it's the other way round. I think it's stupid that MS puts this practically useless browser on the machine, when they can do a 1000% better job with javascript support, SSL support, etc, ad nauseam. When a competing product (Opera on the Zaurus) can do everything a good desktop browser can (SSL, Java/Javascript, style sheets, etc) why cant the browser on the PPC? Why is it so bad at rendering pages quickly as well?
