Default First X-Scale device to market?

http://home.intermec.com/eprise/main/Intermec/Content/Products/Products_ShowDetail?section=Products&Product=CMPTR700COLOR&Category=CMPTR&Family=CMPTR2

Well, probably not exactly what you were hoping for. Then again, if you are looking for a rugged device that can withstand abuses that make your basic iPAQ or Jornada cringe even at the thought of them, this device could be exactly what you are looking for.

Vivid color screen (20 percent larger in size than traditional PDAs), reflective TFT screen allows outdoor viewing.
Three radios can be integrated (WAN, LAN and Bluetooth) for maximum wireless flexibility. LAN supported via integrated 802.11b, WAN by integrated GSM/GPRS or CDMA/ 1xRTT networks. You can have three radios in the same device if you like.
Rugged - can withstand five-foot drops, extreme variations in temperature, battery charges last up to 10 hours.
 Intel's XScale and Microsoft's Pocket PC 2002
Several scanning options for UPC and barcode reading.
Built in Flash-ROM allows storage of critical startup files, applications and data files.

I wonder if it is actually available though... seems like I have heard everything from, Intel hasn't even shipped XScales to they will be here in a couple of weeks, I wish someone could get an answer from the horses mouth.

There are several devices like this one about to appear in the market.
Intel seems not to have enough supply of XScales so it wont be soon that you may buy this machine at the retail store, even if it is an electronic professional store. What is strange is that this device supports Pocket PC instead of using Windows CE Embedded 4.0. It looks like typical Symbol machines. I bought an Intel XScale board and it is plenty of bugs and problems. Hope Intel knows how to fix them on time.

Like what bugs? That would probably explain the delays.

It looks like an updated Intermec 700 series. It is bulky, but if you need a rugged "Pocket PC" this is the one to get. The thing is that their prices are higher than I would like. With integrated barcode scanner and wireless it is just what I want to show. It is one of the options we are considering for DoD.

You know, this thing reminds me of what waitresses use in Japan. Yes, most restaurants don't use pen/paper to take down orders. Why can't we catch up with the rest of the world???

These devices (ruggedized) may be high-priced for individuals, but definitely could have some uses if they have enough I/O options.

This device may be bulky to fit in the pocket, but are significantly smaller (or comparably sized) to other proprietary field test/measure/analyze tools.

I imagine at some point proprietary field tools may migrate to these sorts of devices.

I'd rather carry one of these with a selection of cables...much more flexible & less bulky than carrying around an HP Internet Advisor, Fluke LANmeter, FireBerd T1/PRI tester, and all of the other test & measurement equipment built on proprietary hardware. In theory it could be cheaper as well.
