Default Pocket PC market getting more respect?

Adam Lein wrote in to tell us that the MSN Mobile channel - mobile.msn.com on your Pocket PC - has been redone to look like its big brother on the desktop PC. Hotmail also seems to be easier to use. This is expected from Microsoft since the Pocket PC is their product too, but the truth is the MSN Mobile site has looked like something straight out of 1995 and Hotmail hasn't exactly been Pocket Internet Explorer friendly, not to mention the times MS has upgraded Hotmail only to break Pocket PC access for a few weeks.

Of course, the best thing would be to get a browser on Pocket PC's capable of understanding IE 4+ code, and when Pocket PC's finally get CE .NET underneath, PIE 5.5 will be there. Until then, the larger market share and increasing userbase of Pocket PC owners using wireless connections will help coax some web masters to be mindful of these little devices, which is good news for Pocket PC users everywhere.

I noticed the reworking of MSN Mobile last Friday. At long last, it is now possible to access a msn.com email account through Hotmail via MSN Mobile.

One thing that I dislike about the Pocket PC hotmail site is that it orders the email messages with the OLDEST message first! And it also displays ALL messages in the inbox. It should have paging for every 10 messages and it should show the newest messages first. This seems pretty basic to me. There's also no way to change the options. Maybe this is just a beta version of the new Pocket PC Hotmail.

I'm also not too keen on downloading so much more irrelevant user interface imagery, but this doesn't seem too bad. And it's still usable when images are shut off since you can read the Alt tags and other important text is not image based.

Yeah, yeah neat. Now what do I do for my local news and stocks that I want to track since I don't have a wireless connection and they (Microsoft) discontinued their MSN Mobile channel that came with the PPC in favour of the wireless version?? I understand they want to push their wireless stuff but don't try to force me, I'll get there! "We're sorry, MSN Mobile does not offer an offline channel at this time. To Experience MSN Mobile, we recommend you get a wireless modem and service (give me the cash, chum) or similar wireless connectivity and visit or site at http://mobile.msn.com/pocketpc Thank you for your interest in MSN Mobile." What crap. Thanks for nothing guys.

Has anyone been able to get this to work via an AvantGo channel? I know that's kind of a dirty word these days, but I haven't gotten around to migrating to Mazingo yet.

I have the channel set up, but it won't accept/remember my Passport info. I've visited the site directly on my Jornada, and it remembers, so it's accepting cookies.

I really just want to get Hotmail working via AvantGo again. I remeber what a pain that used to be.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

JoshB

Totally agree ... first thing I noticed too about the Hotmail interface. I do like mobile ESPN better now. The regular site was just HORRIBLE on the browser unless you used some JSLandscape or something like it to change your display settings. Now they have gotten rid of most/all images and I can get sports info FAST! :P
