Default New Mapopolis Map Software

http://www.mapopolis.com/index.html

"Mapopolis makes viewing maps on your handheld easy and fun. It is the simplest yet most complete map viewing application for Palm and Pocket PC devices. Our map library covers the entire U.S. and includes every street and thousands of landmarks."

This is an alternative to Pocket Streets that I hadn't seen yet. There is some interesting stuff here. You can buy individual maps for viewing on your Pocket PC or buy any of several types of subscriptions (Basic, Enhanced, Platinum, Platinum Plus GPS). And, you can use Mapopolis to generate door-to-door driving instructions. Perhaps nicest, though, is the ability to create your own maps and submit them for availability on the Mapopolis Web site for others to use.

I still use the old-fashioned Pocket Streets 2002, but Mapopolis is worth looking at.

Default Mapopolis Basic Maps Free

I've been using Mapopolis for quite a while and I actually like it better than Pocket Streets. Basic maps are free and the navigation of a map is "real time" by just moving the stylus without it having to completely redraw the new section.

Default Mapopolis

I agree with Zagleft1 above. Mapopolis is far superior to Pocket Streets.

Not only is it FAST, it is very functional. Do not be fulled by the screen shot. The screenshot makes the program look cheap. Since the program does not take any time to redraw when moving the screen, the street names just slide down or up the street as you navigate the screen. When you glide your finger across the screen, the map does not disappear in order to redraw. If you tap on the street the entire street is highlighted.

Here are some more interesting and useful features:
1. Door to door driving directions. (not on basic maps)
2. Distance: by air and by street (you can trace your route on the streets and they will be highlighted giving you total distance traveled)
3. Find: When you type in a streets name, a list will appear with all streets which intersect that street (in order). Like streets, you can also find addresses and places.
4. GPS support

Like MS Streets you can create your own pushpins (maplets) to identify places and residences for later use.

The basic maps (demo version) do not have very many place names. I am not sure if the other versions have more places or not. This is one area where MS Streets appears to be better than Mapopolis.
