Default Macromedia Flash MX

http://www.macromedia.com/macromedia/proom/pr/2002/flash_mx_devices.html

If you author Flash content for mobile devices, this looks like good news for you.

"With today's announcement of Macromedia Flash MX, Macromedia, Inc. (Nasdaq: MACR) is bringing even more robust authoring and deployment capabilities to Internet-enabled devices. Macromedia Flash Player is the leading rich client on the Internet, with more than 98 percent of online users able to view Macromedia Flash content today across leading platforms and devices, including Casio, Intel, Liberate, Microsoft, Moxi Digital, OpenTV, Phoenix Technologies, Samsung, Sony, and Symbian (see attached quote sheet).

"Macromedia Flash MX will define the user experience on devices and platforms through its compact delivery format, lightweight client, and ability to deliver unparalleled user experiences," said Rob Burgess, chairman and CEO, Macromedia. "Macromedia Flash MX contains new application development features, device-centric templates, and reusable components that will enable users to quickly and affordably deliver rich content and applications." Default Flash MX Spy Screenshots!

You can find six screenshots of the new Flash MX tool at:

- http://www.brooks.ru/flash/sshots/pages/f601_gif.htm

New Features Inlclude:
- Layer Folders (to organize and minimize groups of layers)
- ActionScript Code Hints (helps you write your code)
- Properties Inspector (content sensitive window, similar to dreamweaver)

... you'll see many more just looking at the screenshots. 8)

Not at all... what makes this so cool and revolutionary is that it's NOT just eye candy. Not only will this allow for animated today screens, it also makes it much easier for developers to make INTERACTIVE plugins without having to deal with the difficulties of eVC++ and the Today screen API.

One of the things pt showed off at the PPCNY conference was a Today screen plug-in made in Flash that provided a zoomable/scrollable map (controlled by the stylus, of course) of the NYC subway system.

It'll be fun to have animated fish swimming around behind my owner info and such, but the interactive capabilities of this are probably going to be what convinces me to disable Dashboard and read those huge Flash 5 development manuals

Man, am I glad I waited a few days to buy a Flash book. Looks like this version of Flash will sport a new UI. I wonder how long it'll take for instructional books to come out for this version. PT, will you be writing an entry-level book on MX?

According to a note on his site, his latest book covers some MX stuff. Amazon has due dates of April for most of their Flash MX books (search for "Flash 6"). According to all the reviews I've read, yes... the interface is completely revamped. This is good and bad. I enjoy playing with new tools/features, but it the learning curve goes up with every upgrade.
