Default WriteShield Screen Protector Kit

http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=5

Screen protectors have always interested me. The simple fact that people are willing to pay more than a dollar for screen protection is really amazing. I cut my own from a quarter yard of vinyl that I got at a fabric store more than 18 months ago for 75 cents. Would it hurt the people who buy screen protectors too much if I said that I still have more than half of it left?

Anyway, Pocket PC Addict has a review of the Write Shield Screen Protector Kit, a pack of three plastic screen protectors, and sufficient cleaning and application management accessories. All for the low, low price of 29.95 USD.

"WriteShields come three to a pack with 3 screen cleaning wipes, three lint proof drying cloths and 3 screen protector removers (these look similar to plastic toothpicks.)... Personally, I am extremely happy with the WriteShield brand screen protector. It is an excellent product that protects the screen very well while maintaining a scratch free appearance. People who use Transcriber will find it is like writing on the naked screen again without the drag of softer screen covers like Write Rights."

Please excuse my cynicism on the topic of screen protectors.

For some reason I find it absurd that some companies sell little pieces of plastic for outrageous sums of money.

I find it even more absurd that other individuals patent screen protectors as intellectual property, and then try and enforce the patent.

If only the screen cleaning wipes could do something about the back of the screen... *sigh*

Each to his own eh?

I have actually purchased the pack at $29.95. I did this about five months ago. The benefits of the product?
You know it will work - eg not get permanently stuck to or damage the touch screen.
It is very tough - I still have the first one on the machine and there is no sign of scratching on the write protector at all, and it also masks the scratching that was evident on the touch screen completely, and is easilt cleaned.
The low gloss surface drastically reduces glare and reflection improving readability.
OK you may be able to buy a cheaper product - but having purchased a PPC at 449 I see little benefit in scrimping on protection when there is a risk that this could entail risk. It's like fitting budget tires on a Porche!
My five cents worth!

I totally share your cynism!!! I was using screen protectors for years with my old Casiopea and it was really just a burden. Now I prefer my iPAQ naked, without c*ndominium. It feels better...

I agree. These particular screen protectors are the best I have ever tried, but so what. I know that I will buy the newest, greatest Pocket PC when the next generation comes out, so why not just let what happens, happen. I prefer my jornada naked as well...

I prefer my Jornada naked as well, but I have a couple old Palms and iPAQs with nothing but screen scratches on the after a couple months of use. I guess I'm just one of those people prone to getting screen scratches. On the other hand, I have several friends that have been able to go almost two years without screen protection and their screens look new as the day the bought their units.

I tried vinyl from a local fabric store as well, but I found that it scratched too easily for my tastes. As a result, I was spending a couple of hours each week cutting and applying screen protectors...yuck! For me, it's worth $12 to get a hard screen protector from someplace like PDAscreenprotectors.com, put it on my Jornada, and just forget about it. To each his own

Default Screen Protection

I ordered the Writeshields from PCE2k and found they had terrible service. Close to 10 days after I ordered (via their website) I got an email confirming my order. Several days later they shipped. When they got here, it had been three weeks. I guess I've gotten jaded by e-commerce sites that work alot faster <sigh>

Installing the protector was ok, good instructions and the only mistakes made were my own. They certainly give you everything you'll ever need to install them. Of course, the depression set in soon after. I turned my J568 on and to my amazement, the protector had dimmed and altered the color balance on my screen. The subtle darkness of the protector was enough to drive me batty! For me, a protector must be clear.

Thank the gods I had ordered a G2 kit and it arrived shortly thereafter. I don't like using the J568 'nekkid', as I have seen to many marred screens in my time.

All in all, the writeshields may be just the ticket for some folks (Ease of use) but for me, too dark!

Sam,

I understand the cynicism too. I went probably 8 months without screen protection myself due to the thick and sticky feeling WriteRight screen protectors. I got one deep screen scratch that 'clicked' every time the stylus ran over it. Also, I developed many 'swirl' scratches that became more or less visible in different lights. It might help to explain how I'm a Transcriber maniac and I write down EVERYTHING!

Once I upgraded and saw the new pristine screen, I realized how much these small scratches degrade the overall appearance. The small loss of brightness with the WriteShield is a small trade-off compared to a permanent irritating scratch.

WriteShields are not a perfect solution, but they are the best I have found so far.

Brad

I use my home made screen protectors, and the truth is that I find screens that don't have my 2mm vinyl on them don't feel write and I can't write well with them.

Foo Fighter will probably remember this, but this warman guy came on to the Visor Central boards and would flame people for supporting WriteRights (becasue they don't licence his brilient invention and honor his intelectual property), and he would also condescend to thoes of us who chose to make our own Screen protectors.

As a result I have no respect for anyone who licences screen protectors from Warman, or supports him in anyway. Its bad enough that people can make money off of selling consumers precut areas of vinyl, but it's worse that some man has pattened cutting vinyl in 3.5 inch rectangles. And he charges 5 cents per square inch...

Just my take on it,

Cheers,
Sam
