Default The Microsoft Wireless 1,2,3

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,84606,tk,dn021902X,00.asp

PCWorld reports on the Microsoft wireless news that Thoughts covered before too. It appeared to me in the newsgroups that the newly introduced names still cause a lot of confusion, so I thought it best to make it a 1,2,3.

1 is the Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition WDA like the MMO2 XDA and the Jornada 928. This is the PDA that doubles as a phone. The primary function will be PDA, so it keeps the PDA size and the big screen. The device is made for two handed use: one hand holds the device which has a touchscreen, and the other the stylus to operate the device and enter information. This product will be ideal for the user that values the functionality of their PDA more than just its size.

2 is the Smartphone 2002 like the Sendo Z100. This is the phone that doubles as a PDA. The primary function will be a phone, so it has the size of a regular mobile phone, but with a larger screen than regular phones. It should be a great mobile phone. But next to that it has the most essential PDA applications (like Calendar and Contacts), and adds connectivity items (Messenger, Inbox, Internet Explorer) to this. The device is made for one handed use: the menu structure is made in such a way that the joypad can navigate through the UI. This product will be ideal for the user that values the size of their device higher than the amount of functionality.

PCWorld quotes the Microsoft spokesperson Ed Suwanjindar: "We don't think that there's an ideal device, so we place multiple bets". These two seem to be different routes to the same goal: wireless access wherever you go. Access to what? The internet? That and more, because that is where #3 steps in, that will benefit users of both #1 and #2, and of course the rest of the Pocket PC world that can have a wireless connection.

3 is Mobile Information Server 2002. This will allow users of the Pocket PC 2002 Phone Edition or the Smartphone 2002 to sync over a wireless connection to their Exchange server. Imagine that: sitting on the train, and syncing the newest messages, appointments and tasks to your device. Wireless rocks!

Wireless rocks? I think not! Specially here in the united states.

GPRS is not quite here yet. And if and when it will be available, it will Cost! big time!

Wireless will rock when the service providers have flatrate pricing. Such as what richochet was. Hope it comes back soon. Now thats wireless! i'm willing to pay $75 a month for all you can eat wireless, even if the connection speeds are 56k.

till then..i'll just keep on dreaming.

I don't agree. We don't have flatrate service plans in my country, but you can buy a data plan of 20 MB of monthly data traffic for 37 or 80 MB of monthly data traffic for 84. I went for the 20 MB plan, and I've stayed within it, although I connected a lot. It's just a thing of choosing what to do: I do check my email, I do start Messenger, I do browse the internet, but I don't download big files. And I would love it if my office had MIS 2002....

You don't have to imagine it, the technology is here today. At my company, I have already implemented a remote sync solution using movianVPN to access our network, and XTNDConnect Server to sync Lotus Notes to the PDA (XTND also supports Exchange). On the Palm side, I have my Visor Prism doing this via Xircom wireline and VisorPhone wireless. On the PPC side, my iPAQ 3835 is doing it via the Compaq wireline modem. The only reason I haven't tested wireless yet is because I'm waiting for the GSM sleeve, rather than purchase one of the other wireless options.
