Default MIDI MPort soon available for iPAQ Pocket PCs

http://www.han-d-solutions.com/mport/

A MIDI interface for the iPAQ Pocket PC sounds quite interesting! I play the piano and the guitar a little bit, and would definately find use for software like this... once it gets released. MPort will eventually include a MIDI IN and a MIDI OUT port, and support the standard 5 pin DIN cables. No external power source will be required.

hey, nice idea, I could pull my MIDI keyboard from the drawer!

but, some doubts:

- is there any valueable software for handling MIDI on PocketPC?

- my MIDI keyboard has power supply, are there any that are battery powered?

How about a more universal solution - CompactFlash Midi Port? I'd definetely go for one of these.

Default Oh yeah!

Now this is nifty! My wife is a keyboardist with a band. I can see plenty of situations in which it would be very convenient to have a midi tune or two stored on my iPaq, whip the midi cable out and plug it in to the keyboard, and play a quick song demo or whatever, or even to simply capture a few bars to an iPaq sequencer for later use/editing/etc.

And I'm glad it's not a CF card. I use my iPaq nekkid (none of those bulky card expansions for me  ), so it would be much more convenient to use the connector cable.

Now if only they can come up with a more elegant cable in the final design; the pics on the site look like it's really a couple of cables with bulky connectors... Bleh... :?

I do think the CF idea would be better, but I fear they probably would still only want to develop it for the iPAQ. Assuming the software is good that goes along with it, this could be very handy so I don't have to move my keyboard (or my computer). I love my Creative LiveDrive with the MIDI ports on the front of my tower, but I think this could be one step better.

Well Hand-D seem to have something in the works, and could I humbly suggest our product - Griff. It exports MIDI files and as soon as we can get our hands on some midi interfaces we'll do realtime in/out too.

I've been bugging Jason to mention us but he keeps stalling - Maybe I upset him off in a previous life ?

I actually think thte company that makes the cable is also making software to go along with it.

But on another note, Griff looks pretty cool. It would be nice if some Pocket PC's had an audio in option so we could use some of those tools in real time with live audio. I guess MIDI in/out is like the first step in getting to that huh.

Yes, Proper audio in/out will be great once the hardware guys catch up. Low latency would be essential too for real-time messing.

On the Midi front, we'd ideally like wireless midi devices (Bluetooth or WLan) to be available. The PocketPC will make a great input device for controller manipulation.
