Microsoft announcements at GSM WC in Cannes
More Pocket PC and Smartphone 2002 news! I just got this from Beth Goza, Microsoft:
"Microsoft believes that software is a key enabler of what can become a thriving wireless ecosystem - one that benefits all who participate from carriers, device manufacturers, and developers to mobile professionals and the organizations they work for. To that end, Microsoft is demonstrating significant progress and industry support with the following announcements at GSM:
Microsoft Announces the Pocket PC Phone Edition software, the platform which enables device manufactures to combine the best of the PDA with integrated wireless technology for both voice and data communications - a great PDA and a great mobile phone. Microsoft is showcasing devices from O2 and HP -- HP will announce the Jornada 928 WDA based on our Pocket PC Phone Edition software.
Microsoft and Texas Instruments are introducing a reference design for building Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 devices powered by TI's integrated chipset and will be demonstrating prototype hardware at the show. This high quality, ready-made solution enables OEMs or carriers to quickly enter the market with a Smartphone device. In support of this news, Compal announced their immediate intent to build and bring to market handsets based on this reference design.
Microsoft and Intel form Mobile Alliance. Microsoft and Intel are working on next genereration reference designs for both Pocket PC and Smartphones that will benefit device manufacturers (quicker time to market w/ high-quality, smart devices) carriers (more choice, lower costs, ability to build new revenue streams around wireless data), and mobile professionals (smart devices, lower costs, more choice)"

Aren't MS testing their "next generation" PPC OS right now?
Now we have Windows XP (*4), Windows.net Server (*4), Windows CE.net, PPC.net (beta), Handheld PC 2k (dead?), PPC 2k2 Phone Edition and Smartphone. I'm sure I've left some out, it's kind of getting ridiculous. I'm getting the impression that the new marketing slogan will be something like "Windows everywhere", of course they'll just be admitting their actual permanent strategy if it is...

I'm not aware of that. The next version is still around a pretty big corner.

What did you think they were doing? Of course it was the intention to bring the Windows programming model and great connectivity to as many devices as possible.

Smartphones no support
First of all, "Windows everywhere" is a good slogan, maybe they will steal, I mean aquire it from you.
Next I will stay on my pet gripe, still no mention of CDMA smart phones. ANd I think smartphones darn well better have Bluetooth built in.

I don't know if anyone watches The Simpsons (I'm sure someone here does), but I'm just picturing the episode where Homer starts his own Internet company and Bill Gates comes around and "Aquires" it... Very funny.

I'm with you on both counts:
What do we want: 1xRTT!
When do we want it: Now!
What do we want: Bluetooth enabled smartphones
when do we want it: Now!
Not a war cry that rolls off the tonge (I can't spell: it must be 2 in the morning again! (and sure enough)) really is it...

You forgot the "...and we all lived happily ever after..." bit.

The only problem with it is that there are probably shots of "RTCW" (Return To Castle Wolfenstein) running on a Smartphone somewhere...
If it is true, it would have some serious show off value!

Wakey! Wakey! While you're a waitin', I'm a playin'.
And anyway, don't knock snake..... it's a damn addictive game!
... As are the other dull and boring Nokia games (and yes, there's a card game for the older users to play as well);
(good thing the SDK has been freely available for a while eh readers?)
( ok, I confess, the Snowblarding and the Soccer aren't actually released yet :-()
Of course, I had to go hunting for these screenshots because I don't play games  , It just proves my point, Micro$oft not only locks users into M$ technology, but also into M$ thinking. As my signature says.....
