Default Embedding photos in contacts?

With my original Pocket PC 2000 device, I tried synching contacts that had images embedded in the Outlook notes field. It seemed like a neat feature - having a photo of the person you were going to meet, etc. Yet when I did a sync, none of the photos would come across. I assumed that this meant Contacts on the Pocket PC didn't support rich data, because you can't see HTML content in the notes field as well.

I was checking the Pocket PC newsgroup tonight, and Beverly Howard made an interesting post claiming that it was possible to get images in the notes field. Curious, I began some experimentation of my own. The results? I was able to get an image 100 x 100 into the contact, but the results were not pretty (well, my beautiful wife is pretty, but the way my Pocket PC is displaying her is not):

That was the result of a direct clipboard copy/paste of a 16-bit colour JPEG image. I thought if I did a manual dithering down to 8-bit colour it might look better, but the resulting pasted image didn't appear at all. If you try to attach a photo to the contact, that won't work either.

What gives? It seems like there's SOME functionality here, but not enough to be truly useful. Are these hooks Microsoft will enhance in the future, or an attempt at something that didn't work very well?

Would that be a photo of Mrs. Dunn?? Uh-oh. Sleeping in the doghouse is probably even colder in Canada...

I couldn't help but bust out laughing. Maybe Ashley won't be reading the site

On a more serious note ... Outlook as always been very stupid about storing images. Why can't you store an image in a FIELD in Outlook? You can jam it into the notes field -- however, MS has still never implemented an Image field in the contact record. Something that people have been screaming about since the first edition of Outlook.

I hate to say that but Palm has this feature implemented since OS 3.5
Also the calendar of Palms devices is more complete. In my opinion, those are points where MS has to push a little more.

I agree with you there. Handspring has improved on just the basic Palm calendar as well. They have packaged advanced date book with all of their handhelds.

I agree there as well. I have always been frustrated at Outlook for that very reason.

You know, last night when I was writing it, I purposefully didn't put anything about the subject of the photo in there just because I wanted to AVOID this discussion. I forgot that some of you know what Ashley looks like.

The original post has been edited to cover my ass.

Default compliments

I think Jason is making the highest compliment when he uses a picture of his newlywed wife as the subject. Except for my wife, none of my family are in my contacts, maybe there is a reason to have contact records for the rest of the clan.

You can always include a shortcut to a picture in memory.
