Default Maxtor Leverages Mediabolic Media Server Software into New Maxtor Shared Storage Plus™ Product Line

http://www.mediabolic.com/press/item.php?id=291

"Mediabolic, a leading provider of end-to-end software solutions for connected entertainment products, and Maxtor Corporation (NYSE: MXO), one of the world’s leading suppliers of hard disk drives and consumer storage solutions, today announced that Maxtor will integrate Mediabolic’s award-winning Media Server software into the Maxtor Shared Storage Plus, an easy-to-use, consumer/SOHO-targeted network-attached storage (NAS) device. In a related announcement released earlier today, Maxtor unveiled the new Maxtor Shared Storage Plus, a three-in-one network drive that provides shared storage, data backup and media streaming. When connected to a home network, the Maxtor Shared Storage Plus drive acts as a media server for digital entertainment, providing the ability to stream photo, music, and video files to multiple, connected entertainment devices throughout the network. In addition, because the Maxtor Shared Storage Plus drive is PC-independent, it is designed to distribute personal media even when the PC is powered off."

Interesting stuff! The Mediabolic Media Server Software looks like it's going for the jugular of Windows Media Connect, and based on all the problems I keep having with WMC, I think there's ample opportunity for someone to improve upon the concept. I had purchased a 300 GB Maxtor NAS drive about a month ago, so I was a bit irritated that this new drive had come out with a feature I might want to use. But I'm in luck! According to Bill Smith, Director of Marketing for Mediabolic, Maxtor will be releasing a software update for their NAS drives that will with them into "plus" drives with the Mediabolic software. Cool! I'm looking forward to checking this out, especially if through clever mapping I can get my Media Center 2005 PC to read content off the Maxtor NAS drive.
