Thirsty Bag for Water Emergencies and Your Portable Device
"The iFixit Thirsty Bag can be a life-saver when it comes to salvaging water-damaged iPhones and iPads... if you happen to have one around when an accident happens."
I think that is the key, you have to have it around when you need it. At $6.95 USD a pop they aren't too bad so you could get a couple and keep around the house or wherever else you think you might need one stored. If the worst happens and you wash your iPhone, wipe it down and get it in the bag. Overnight it will suck up all the moisture it can, hopefully saving your device. No idea if it really works, but I'm not going to be a test case, that's for sure! Check out the video here.
