Default PC World on Carrier Exclusives

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent...vity_sucks.html

"Microsoft has finally unveiled the Windows Phone 7 platform--including a diverse selection of ten different Windows Phone 7 smartphones right out of the gate. Despite Microsoft's struggles getting into gear in the mobile game, Windows Phone 7 looks awesome. Unfortunately, Windows Phone 7 is also a prime example of why device exclusivity is bad for all parties and handicaps the potential of the platform."

Tony Bradley over at PC World is frustrated with carrier exclusives. Essentially, as an AT&T customer, Tony is limited to the three least desirable phones (in his opinion) available in the US. He argues that wireless carriers and customers should have the freedom to choose the carrier/phone that they want. Although I can understand his frustration, I also understand the need from a business perspective. Companies need exclusives to attract new wireless customers.  I'm sure that after launch there will be companies that will buck the current trend of carrier exclusives. Samsung has already displayed this behavior by releasing the Captivate, Fascinate, Vibrant, and Epic 4G. Only time will tell if the launch strategy will prove a success.
