I just received a new laptop in December with a 256GB SSD and it is amazingly fast. Full startups and shutdowns feel more like going in and out of suspend. Deciding to turn my laptop on is now a trivial decision. Large applications, like anything from Adobe, also start and run much faster.
Although I keep my large desktop running most of the time, like the previous two posters, when I do boot it from its RAID0 array (boots faster than from a single drive), it now feels irritatingly sluggish. Now I'm looking for an SSD boot drive for that computer.
My advice is similar the previous two. Don't do it! Once you get an SSD drive, you'll be forever ruined from enjoying a computer with a spinning disc ever again. Wait until you can afford to put an SSD into every computer you own. The good news is that you don't need one large enough for all your data. You only need one large enough for your OS and your Programs.
