for those individuals that would like to get new smartphones but are unable to because they are not within upgrade range on their Cingular contract this might be the thing for you. Cingular offers what they call the "VIP program". if we have a customer that has a spent a certain amount of dollars in a certain period of time they will let that customer upgrade early and in most cases offer them special discounts like waived upgrade charge ($18.00USD on Cingular), bonus minutes, add-on features, etc.
i bring this up because i see a lot of people that want new phones all day long but still have 8-15 months left before they can upgrade. if youre a smartphone user chances are you use your phone for business and you spend a load of money each month and you might be able to take advantage of this.
to see if you would be eligable for something like that you can stop by your nearest Cingular COR (corporate) store. Make sure its not a Cingular Authorized Dealer but an actual Cingular owned store. Those are the only stores that can help you. You can usually tell the difference because the authorized dealers can't except payments at their store. you can also call 611 from your phone and ask a customer service rep if you would be eligable for an upgrade.
hopefully that helps anyone that wants a new phone but doesn't want to pay the retail price.
