Default We can finally play iTunes songs on our Zune (Apple does away with DRM)

So it looks like Apple an EMI have entered an agreement to offer DRM-free music on iTunes for $1.29. Here's a snippet from the article on AppleInsider.com

EMI Music launches DRM-free iTunes downloads in higher-quality
By AppleInsider Staff
Published: 08:25 AM EST Apple today announced that EMI Music's entire digital catalog of music will be available for purchase DRM-free (without digital rights management) from the iTunes Store worldwide in May.

DRM-free tracks from EMI will be offered at higher quality 256 kbps AAC encoding, resulting in audio quality indistinguishable from the original recording, for just $1.29 per song. In addition, iTunes customers will be able to easily upgrade their entire library of all previously purchased EMI content to the higher quality DRM-free versions for just 30 cents a song, Apple said.

iTunes will also offer customers a simple, one-click option to easily upgrade their entire library of all previously purchased EMI content to the higher quality DRM-free format for 30 cents a song. All EMI music videos will also be available in DRM-free format with no change in price.
Edit: It looks like there's also info on EMI's official site where you can listen to a webcast of the event and see pictures

Nice and all, but virtually all DRMs can be removed using widely available software. This means all DRM'ed music can be un-DRM'ed and used however your wish in iPod or Zune or whatever. Still, it is nice to see they upped the rate to 256kbs. Alas, still not lossless and this is where the iPod kills the Zune, as Zune demands lossy compression and does not provide a way to store/play lossless music. Amazing today in recorded music's history sound quality is widely going BACKWARDS instead of forwards. Last time that happened in mainstream audio was the 8-track tape.
