Default Crackling Speaker Interference Before Incoming Calls

http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/are-you-a-cellular-engineer-109536.php

"I have a quick technical question about the radio interference chirps that are sent by phones right before phone calls that can be heard in speakers or seen in CRT monitors. If you know what those are, could you email me at ..."

Gizmodo asks for the answer to something I've always just accepted as the way it works. Of course, I have wondered why, but I typically use the pre-chirps as a signal to end the current distraction and get ready for another. If you've ever wondered why, Gizmodo has posted the answer they received on their site. 8)

Blech. I had that happen all the time when my MPx220 would wireless activesync every 5 minutes. The worst was when I was in a meeting the the speakerphones (whether they were on or off!) would go nuts! Always a little embarrasing...

It's nice to get a more technical explanation though!

YES - this would happen to the speakers in my car. I thought it was my MP3 player until I was invited away for the weekend, put the phone next to the OFF clock radio next to the bed and it started happenning there. I move the phone away from the clock radio and the interference stops. I've since realized it happens almost anywhere.
