Default Philips Rollable Display Pocket e-Reader Readius

http://www.ifa-show.com/2005/philips_review/101_philips_e-reader.html

"It seemed to me that Philips has something very interesting to show at their Philips booth. Located in hall 22, Philips offers the visitor a lot of new products from hard disk recorders to HDTV devices, Blue-Ray solutions to prototypes. Only one working device is currently present at the IFA show. Of course I needed to see this one with my own eyes so the search began. Somewhere in a corner one of Philips's demonstrating girls carried it hanging around her neck: Philips' rollable display device."

We have been hearing about these flexible displays for some time now and it looks like the prototypes are finally coming out. Imagine a phone display that could be enlarged to a size bigger than a postage stamp but not require a huge phone in your pocket.

Whoa! This is cool! :shocked!:

I have been following this e-paper, rollable paper for quite some time and I believe this is the first demo-able prototype I have seen. (Or wait maybe there was another one.) Anyway hats of the Phillips, for pulling it off.

It is still a long way from market. I guess in the later part of 2007 (or 2008) most likely we will be crying for Smartphones with these displays. Just like we are now crying for Wi-Fi support.

Alright, can someone give me the short "why we care" on this? I know it means more flexible displays in smaller packages, but it's not readable when it's rolled up. Who wants to un-roll or unfold their screen before using their device? Lets say we have a flip phone, how would the screen cross the hinge?

I'm not being mean or anything. I agree it's cool, but I don't know why everyone wants this on their handheld devices. :?

Ok what if you had a small display on say a 5600 sized phone, then as you roll this thing out the image fills to fit the size of the roll out, sort of like unrolling a scroll. I'm sure Motorola could make this work! :rotfl:

I agree with Jerry, not that Moto will be able to put something out but the point that device makers can put a regular QVGA screen with keypad and have something that can slide out or be pulled out, which will be a secondary screen. But when pulled out it will provide bigger wider surfing and reading area. 8)

We have seen phones with pull out QWERTY keyboard, why cant we have pull out auxillary screen? ;-)

When you have look at maps, surf or read mails or ebooks - pull out the screen. Other times use the smaller screen for casual reading.
