HTC HD2 Ain't That Big
When I first heard about this beast, my initial thought was that it might be just a bit smaller than my Advantage with that massive 4.3" screen. Turns out HTC had a big trick up its sleeve - because capacitive screens (yes, the HD2's got one) doesn't require that much bezel space to fit, the frame is small enough to make the body almost (though not quite) comparable to phones with much smaller screens. The comparison to the iPod touch above is a pretty good example - in fact, in terms of volume, the HD2 is actually slightly smaller than the iPhone 3GS thanks to a thinner profile. My only concern now is, how the heck do you use the hardware buttons at the bottom while using the HD2 with one hand? For more example pics, check mobile-review.com.

A couple of quick impressions:
Wow! That is a big phone. I own the original Touch HD (though for now it has been benched in favor of the Diamond 2). While it is not what I would call heavy, you could never forget it was in your shirt pocket either. The screen was big, but where that really worked was for pictures and video. I found reading regular websites on the HD as big a pain as on any other smartphone (iPhone included). Panning webpages just ain't cool after a while. Websites designed for phones are easy to read on phones of this size.
Second, the mobile-review reviewer makes what I think is a very poor point in his discussion of the new HTC Sense user interface. Saying Sense is just old Touch Flo 3D is like saying Windows 7 is just Windows 95. Yes, they share family traits, but Sense appears (from videos I've seen. I haven't had the chance to experience it) to be far more than just old Touch Flo 3D. Each new HTC phone has enjoyed some enhancements to the Touch Flo interface over the past few years. Sense appears not to be just an enhancement, but an entirely new phone UI experience. In my opinion, it wouldn't be a bad idea for Microsoft to strongly consider licensing Sense as its UI for WM 7.

I'm sure (and hopeful) MS has its own tricks up its sleeve for WM7 without using HTC's work. TF3D/sense are still just front ends to cover up WM. You still find the ancient UI if you dig too deep. WM7 is a whole new OS.

The iPhone is 114.3 x 61 x 12.19mm
Area = 6972.3mm2
Volume = 84,992.34mm3
The HTC HD2 is 120.4 x 67 x 11mm
Area = 8066.8mm2 (16% larger than iPhone)
Volume = 88,808.5mm3 (4.5% larger than iPhone)
There are loads of people complaining the iPhone is too large - so how many more are going to complain the HD2 is 6mm taller and wider than the iPhone, and bearing in mind that the back of the iPhone is significantly more curved the feel in the hand will make it appear even slimmer than the HD2.

I don't know...it still looks HUGE to me. I really need to get my hands on one, but overall I think it's too big for me.

I don't mind its size. Love browsing on my iPod Touch and my HTC Hero. I recall I once had HP IPaq 4700. This was 131 x 77 x 14.9mm. Bigger than the iPhone and HTC HD2. The 4700 did occassionally cause me to get stiffness in my hands after long periods, but the size was fine.
Personally I can't wait for the HTC HD2 but I am also keen to see what Android 2.0 devices surface with similar hardware specs. And then, does Apple have something amazing up its sleeve. Doubt it.

Good catch, my bad.
Actually, coming from someone who uses an Advantage (98 x 133.5 x 16.8, 360gms)- all these phones look tiny and featherweight to me.

Jason, didn't you use the Universal at one point? I'd imagine that to be bigger volume-wise!

Yes, that was a big device - but it had a keyboard, so the bulk was the trade-off. I like big screens, but the HD2 might just be too big. I need to see it in person though to get a feeling of the size...hoping to do so at the upcoming Mobius event.
