I'd be interested in comparing speed of every day tasks like phone, contacts, email etc. on iPhone running 1.0, iPhone 3G running 2.0, iPhone 3GS running 3.0 and iPhone 4 running 4.0. iPhone 4 would still win, but I bet not by as much. iOS 3 and 4 have kind of bogged down compared to earlier versions of iOS.

I've only the one device to make comparisons with, but I'm shocked and dismayed at how badly my iPod Touch 2G performs with iOS 4 on it. The damn SLIDER doesn't even work properly - I'll swipe it, hear the sound, but not see the animation, so I'll re-swipe it, then while I'm doing that, it unlocked itself. I'm really surprised that Apple thought this was acceptable performance.

Have you tried 4.0.1? Some folks say that helps.

Also, have you tried a Restore and set up as new device (i.e. don't restore from an old backup)? AKA, ye old hard reset. Can be a pain to lose all your data (I would hope most of it's in the cloud anyway), but usually helps a lot. You can always choose to restore from your old backup at a later point anyway if it's not helping.

Yeah I have 4.0.1 running on an iPhone 3G (which has an even slower processor than the iPod Touch 2G plus has phone stuff to manage) and it's pretty sluggish but not that bad (but I did set it up as new as I was transferring it to a new user). Still I'm thinking about downgrading it back to 3.1.3

Nope, I haven't tried that yet. Will do so this week.

What is this, a Windows Mobile PDA? ;) I haven't tried that - maybe I will as a last resort. Pretty ridiculous that approach is still needed at all...
