Timely article: we are gearing up to replace our family / backup system and have began scouting about for ways to more-or-less FULLY Automate the backup process.

In days (years...) past this was relatively simple: all of the important data files would fit on a handful of floppies, .... then a ZIP drive, .... then a CD..... Now they won't fit on a single DVD!

We have always used the "Multiple Machine" scheme, but even that has become problematical as the number of photographic, video, & music files have exploded: our primary backup system no longer has sufficient HD space, so our backups are now spread across 2 machines & one external HD (which is at least fully automatic in & of itself).

Our goal is to return to a single backup system - and, yes, it does seem wise to back THAT up as well, although that would still leave the Off Site option wanting. (Our prior backup unit had removable HD bays, which made it easy to carry data around. May have to resurrect that idea - OR move things to The Cloud....).
