Jason Chen of Gizmodo received some hands-on time with the hardware thanks to an anonymous source. He called the long-rumored, supposed Google Phone a 'Droid killer' -- ironic, because Motorola attempted to position its Droid, which launched in November, as an 'iPhone killer.'"</em></p><p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="600" height="360" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1CJFdG-MARw&amp;ap=%26fmt=18" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="600" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1CJFdG-MARw&amp;ap=%26fmt=18"></embed></object></p><p>The video is a little shaky, so it is hard to tell the quality of the phone and it's screen which Chen calls&nbsp;<em>"probably the best screen we have seen on a smartphone. Probably." </em>But the screen doesn't have multi-touch, there is mediocre quality on music playback and they didn't test the phone aspect of the device. So still some unknowns. The phone is supposed to go on sale in early 2010.&nbsp;</p>

Assuming this is like most other Android devices, the statement that the "screen doesn't have multitouch" is likely incorrect. Rather, the core apps don't support it. I'm guessing we'll see an alternative browser (and maps) build that does support pinch & zoom and other multitouch gestures, at least if history continues to repeat.

What I'm really interested in seeing is how this performs in daylight. That's been the #1 criticism of AMOLED thus far and is a major showstopper for me. Beautiful colors and absolute blacks mean nothing if you can't see the screen to operate the phone when outside or even in the car.

Sounds like 6 of 1, half dozen of another. Doesn't help me much if the screen technically supports it but the core apps don't.

Bah, if I wanted to install 3rd party alternates to replace faulty core apps, I would've stuck with Windows Mobile!;)
