The data is based on monthly user surveys averaged on a quarterly basis, and thus reflects actual handsets in use rather than sales of new devices."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/at/auto/1261077581.usr105634.jpg" style="border: 1px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>You can checkout the report and the data they used to draw their conclusions on the <a href="http://www.fiercedeveloper.com/pages/what-were-top-smartphone-operating-systems-october" target="_blank">Fierce Developer site</a>, but the quick and dirty is that according to comScore data 36 million in the US are smartphone owners and 25% of them use the iPhone. Rim is still number one with 40% of the smartphones, and Windows Mobile has dropped to just over 20%.</p>
