Windows users can download the installer from download page and it weighs 17MB."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com//dht/auto/1247513448.usr20447.png" style="border: 0px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>Media available on the Internet is fragmented into dozens, if not hundreds, of different codecs.&nbsp; From Quicktime to Windows Media to Mastroka, it is a constant hassle to make sure you have the right media player for the right file.&nbsp; VideoLAN started the VLC Media Player way back in 2001 as an all-in-one media player.&nbsp; It recently just reached its version 1.0 milestone and is available for download.&nbsp; Why do you want it?&nbsp; Well, the player can handle pretty much any video (or music) file you throw at it that isn't laden with DRM.&nbsp; From mp3s, to avi to AVCHD videos from your camcorders, VLC handles it all without complaints or extra configuration.&nbsp; The most recent update gives it a few tweaks, such as live recording and support for HD codecs.&nbsp; With all those bells and whistles, there are a few minor drawbacks.&nbsp; VLC (though I have not confirmed this with 1.0.0) lacks hardware decoding support and I find the playback interface quite primitive.&nbsp; Still, it is my choice media player, since VLC has handled pretty much everything I have thrown at it.&nbsp; What do you use?</p>

Used VLC for a while, but somehow ended up with GOM Player when added Vista.
(dual-boot: VLC is still available on the XP partition....).

No complaints, but also only use GOM for Music: about only time a video ever runs is within Firefox (3.5), either from ESPN or one of the news sites.

And if it is something WE shot, WMP is still the default playback app... :o

I love VLC - it handles almost anything. The UI isn't pretty, that's for sure, but overall it's a really useful program and breaks my systems free from the tyranny (and instability) of codecs.

VLC is heavy and buggy (it randomly pixelates movies), GOM is lighter, faster and way more stable.

I have noticed the pixellation problem with VLC, though it always settles down after 5 seconds or so. I'll check out GOM though...
