About 30 people in line so far.
From the sounds of the chatter there will be lots of unhappy people when they realize that AT&T is only open at 7:00 for pre-order customers. :-O

found out I am eligible for discount upgrade so I'm going to swing by AT&T on my lunch break at 1pm, in about 4 hours, to see if there is a line, if not I'll pick one up. When I drove by the one in Oregon City (south of Portland) there were 5 or 6 waiting in line at 0600 :-)

FedEx delivered mine around 12:45 pm. Hooked it up to iTunes and go the dreaded "Activation could not complete- may take up to 48 hours" message. Seems like AT&T's activation servers are getting crushed. At least it's letting me sync it and configure it- I just don't have phone or data connection (but WiFi works).
I decided to set the new phone up clean (rather than recover from a backup of my 3G), so I have a lot of work to do getting things just the way I want them.

Do what I did... Pop your old SIM in. I couldn't wait because I'm at work with it so I figured I'd give it a whirl and it works. I'm carrying the new SIM and the removal tool in my wallet. If my phone goes dead, I can swap it anywhere.
So far, so good!

I'm not that worried about it because my 3G is on my desk right next to my 3GS. So it'll be just fine until the activation goes through.

Ended up having to take my back for a busted home button. Took a little while to do the replacement but I'm up and running now.

I was up at 4 a.m. (blame the cat) so I decided to stay up and see what was happening on the rogers site. A white 32GB should be here in 3 - 7 business days.

Ah, screw it. After over 4 hours I got tired of waiting and just popped my old SIM in. Yup, it works! I probably would have been ok except Yahoo! push email doesn't work without a data connection (even if you're on WiFi) and I like my push email.
Be curious to see how long it takes AT&T/Apple to get their acts together. I tried calling customer service but they told me that there was nothing to do except be patient and wait.

Amazingly, the Oregon City store for AT&T was sold out of all 3G S models! However they could make me a nice deal on a black 8gig 3G, yea I declined , off to Apple Store at 8pm!

9 hours later, the new SIM is active. All is right with the world.

Isn't this the third year in a row that this has been a problem?
I'm thinking that the lesson all we tech-head geeks can take from this is to wait a week the next time they come out and let the masses deal with the activation issues next time . . .

Activation took 18 hours.
Yes I should have known better although I got the previous 2 generations of phones months after launch, so had no activation troubles.

I picked one up last night about 8pm at the Apple Store at Bridgeport in Lake Oswego, had plenty, and activation was done in a few minutes so they must have cleared up the backlog :)
