But I was looking forward to the update and, in case you are living under a rock, I'm sure you are aware that it is now available. I had some problems with my update, but I think that was due to the demand on the iTunes servers. Once there was an opening it went pretty smooth. And I'm loving the new features. Now all I need is an iPhone 3G S and I will be one happy camper!</p>

We actually ordered an iPod Touch for my daughter that shipped yesterday (as part of the student promotion when you buy a Mac; the 13" MBP should be coming next week.) But I'll be curious to see if the Touch comes with 3.0 preinstalled.

When does the 3.0 update come out for the iPod Touch? I synced it today and didn't see anything new...

My understanding is that there is a fee to pay to upgrade the iPod Touch; I do not own one so I am not sure if the update process is the same as for the iPhone.

I'm attempting the upgrade for my 1st gen touch now. Assuming US and CA are the same, you go through the store. There's a link on the front page. $9.95. Normally I wouldn't upgrade (not much to gain, really, and I'm getting a 3GS soon enough), but it does claim to allow automatic login to hotspots. Assuming that means what I hope it means, then it now becomes 10x more useful to me (since I have to login to a stupid web interface each time I connect at my office).

However, the store ain't working right now (reset network connections at every turn). Seems like everyone and their niece are trying to get it currently.

I'm on the fence about upgrading my Touch. I probably will eventually unless I sell it, but I barely use it since getting my iPhone.

Took an hour to finally get through (no not clicking every minute, but trying every few) and I did finally get it. It took me a few minutes to really notice the difference, but it is a nice upgrade. Not life altering like 1.0 to 2.0, but it is a little faster in general and a LOT faster in the browser. Maybe it's me, but it also seems to run cooler (mine at least used to get pretty hot with only moderate use). Copy & Paste is really well done. Spotlight? Meh. Still don't know about the auto sign-in for wifi, but if that proves to work for me, then this will actually prove to be life altering. :)

Visit http://www.apple.com/ca/ipodtouch/softwareupdate.html and click "Update Now".

Well, it IS nice to have my notes again - Evernote is history. And typing in landscape in more apps is nice. I think the best thing though is the arrival of cut and paste for us!

That being said...

I still wish I could customize the "home screen" when the device is locked - Something simple like my contact info in case the phone is lost. I would have also like to be able to pick something other than the 6 "chimes" Apple gave us for txt messages.

I noticed that also. Amazing speed improvement. I never really had stability issues, but the speed improvement is noticeable.

I noticed the fonts are slightly different in the built in apps (notes and SMS, for example) and the transitions are different when you "minimize" an app. Minor things but interesting ones. Like they tweaked the design or something.

I did the upgrade, pretty painless - definitely the way upgrades should be done. I like how it added a Voice Memos app to taunt me with the fact that Apple didn't put a microphone in the Touch. My $50 Sansa Clip has a microphone. I noticed the addition of Bluetooth - that's just for headphones, right? Everything else looks pretty much identical.

If you buy the iPhone earbuds with the included microphone (or other third party headphones with a microphone that support the Touch), and you have the 2G Touch, then you do, indeed, have a microphone.

Technically, it's also for the Nike+ features, which use BT.

It is also for a bunch of yet to be developed accessories, exchange of contact information with other iPxxxx users (I think), and games that offer peer-to-peer play. I've got the 1st gen touch, so I got none of this.

There are a bunch of other tweaks. For example, audiobooks and podcasts now are grouped by book/podcast and offer some nice extras like 2x playback and quick 30 second rewind (nice if your mind wanders briefly). Exchange support is better. CalDAV is there. If we could make GMail push work (either by Apple implementing the simple IMAP IDLE protocol or Google implementing EAS for mail in addition to calendars and contacts), then I'd be in PIM heaven like I was 4 years ago with my Treo 650.

This was definitely the year of refinement for Apple (this, Snow Leopard, "new" MacBooks and Mini, etc.). Good stuff--not complaining--but nothing really amazing. Perhaps they'll pick up with innovation again next year. ;)

Good to know, but having to use a certain pair of headphones to get a microphone is pretty silly in my opinion. My guess it that Apple was too scared of the iPod Touch + VOIP software eating into iPhone sales to include a microphone in the Touch...

It's nice to see the iPhone finally getting most of the features it should have had when it launched (no cut and paste till now? PLEASE!). That said I am enjoying all the new functionality a lot. :)

It did not. My daughter's reaction: "I like it just the way it is. I don't want to upgrade."
