OK, I confess, as much as I hated having to do it, I have gone back and purchased multiple copies of the same content in different formats. Normally, I'm against this as a matter of principle since I figure I should not have to pay twice for the same content. Of course, the move to HD content changes that equation for me since just like the move from VHS to DVD, whether you like it or not, you are getting a higher quality level, which has value. For VHS, over time, I've replaced everything in my collection with DVD. For DVD, I'm being more selective since a) for a lot of content the difference from DVD to Blu-ray is negligible or unimportant and b) Blu-ray players are backwards compatible so I can still use my DVDs. But, there are always certain titles that I'll want the latest and greatest versions of.

Star Wars is an obvious example for me. I've bought it 4 times already and I'll be buying it a 5th when it eventually comes out on Blu-ray. Lord of the Rings is another example, I bought the regular and extended versions on DVD, but I'll only be picking up the extended versions on Blu-ray since I find the extended version massively superior to the theatrical release. Also, I'm a big Firefly fan, so I bought Serenity on DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray. Interestingly, I don't plan on buying the Firefly series on Blu-ray. I rented it and found that due to the grainy style of the series, it did not benefit much from the Blu-ray transfer. So, what are your guilty pleasures that have caused you to double dip for the same content?

Good question:
Well, Star Wars is a natural; yes, I have it on VHS and DVD.
I didn't buy much in the way of VHS stuff, though so I'm safe on that count.
BluRay I haven't actually bought anything yet--I'm holding out for the
Oppo BD player *and* rational pricing from the studios. Which means I'm not buying any for a while yet. (I'll sooner spring for premium 8GB broadband to take better advantage of the Zune HD rentals coming to 360...)
Does the WB red2blu trade-in count as double dipping?
I did get the Harry Potter collection HD-DVD set and the 5 freebies that came with the XBOX HD-DVD downgraded to BD...
Right now I don't see myself rebuying anything I have in DVD as BD any time soon, if ever.

I'm curious, with The Godfather, how good does it look? I know the old film stock have gobs of resolution, but in terms of how well that shows up on Blu-ray - do you think it was worth the purchase?

I did some "double dipping" when I got my HD-DVD player...not many, just a handful: The Last Samurai, and a few others. The "red to blu" campaign was great, I swapped out all but three of my HD-DVD discs to Blu-ray. A few movies that I want to "double" up to Blu-ray: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Tombstone, Iron Man, maybe a few more.
The only ones that I want to double up on are:
1) Movies that I think will benefit significantly from moving to Blu-ray resolution (Iron Man)
2) Movies that I have crappy DVD versions of - Tombstone for instance is an awful transfer, and has aspect ratio problems on both my Samsung Blu-ray player and my Xbox 360. The last time I watched it I had to use the TV aspect ratio scaler, and it looked awful.

I have the Laserdisc version of Star Wars and the DVD. No prequels for me. :P I am uncertain if the original trilogy would benefit from Bluray. Anyone have any idea on that?

Terminator 2 is one I've purchased several times (including 3 different HD formats). I bought the Extreme DVD / WMVHD version, imported the HD-DVD, and will be buying the Blu-Ray version soon.
There are others where I've double-dipped, but like Jason I used red2blu. I've upgraded almost all of my HD-DVDs for cheap.
