Video format support on the Omnia

Samsung seems to be marketing the Samsung Omnia as a very media-friendly device that includes its own player, media library, etc. And yet, most of the mpg and avi videos I try to play on it are not supported. I am surprised, since these are very standard formats.

Is it possible to install or update codecs on Windows Mobile? Or do I have to find some other player that supports more formats? What are people's experience with this type of thing?
