View Full Version : Email on iPod Touch Question

I set up my personal email account on my iPod Touch a few weeks back, but haven't used it much until this morning. I fired it up and downloaded my new email. There was some spam there (of course) and I was surprised to see it load images without prompting me first. That would seem to be a great way to confirm my email address as live with spammers, which is of course a horrible idea...and I can't find any setting for the email client to not load images by default unless they're from a trusted sender (or something similar). So am I missing anything here?

You're not missing anything, Jason. I'm not aware of any image settings on the iPhone/iPod Touch for email. As far as I know, the only option is to download the email in html with all images by default. I use gmail, which has always been good about filtering out the spam. One gets through every now and again, but I can deal with that on the web client. At least with gmail, I'm glad the iPhone doesn't restrict images. I hated how Pocket Outlook required you to approve images from each and every source contained in the email. I always wished it had a blanket approval option.

Thanks for confirming it - it's stunningly naive of Apple to think like it's 2002 with their security. I haven't seen an email client automatically download embedded images in years - it's standard practice to block embedded images from unknown third parties unless the user asks them to load. This really surprises me - this means I can't use it for email. I mean what the hell...

I honestly haven't had a problem with it, but then again, gmail does a really good job of filtering my spam so I don't spend much time worrying about it.

I totally agree. Gmail antispam is fine but having used ipod mail application for a few months, I have seen the number of spam increasing dramatically. So if I want to check the sapm to identify mail falsely marked as spam, I have to waste more and more time (whatever good is gmail, it can't be perfect all time). Apple has a few things to learn there as the problem is quite similar with Mac OS X mail application: by default, images are downloading, spam included. Operating system is definitely better but amil application is quit poor compared to Outlook / Outlook Express.
Would anyone suggest a better iphone mail application ?
