"We will have over 10 phones available in the U.S. alone. We expect to see that grow," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division said during his keynote speech at the CTIA wireless technology showcase."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/zt/auto/1239169541.usr8.jpg" style="border: 1px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>With all the talk of Windows Mobile 6.5 lately I find myself growing a little more excited every day. Unfortunately Mr. Bach did not mention how long it will take to have over 10 devices running Windows Mobile 6.5 available here in the United States. I'm also curious as to how many of those devices will be running the Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard platform. It is, however, nice to see Microsoft starting to gain a little momentum moving forward in the "Smartphone Wars" after such a long period of being stale and feeling dated.</p>

I'm a little surprised its so few. In the last 6 months (since October) 115 Windows Mobile devices were released. I would expect at least 10% of those to be available in the US. If so, then 10 in the next 6 months is not an improvement over the current launch rate.

Here's the list of winmo devices launched during the last 6 months according to pdadb.net.

The US phone market is firmly in the grip of the carriers - if they dont pick it up there is practically zero chance people will be willing to buy such a phone; only a very small number of people will buy unlocked as well as the fact that there arent many options to buy unlocked from a B&M store. Plus only GSM phones can be used this way, CDMA phones have to be provisioned on their network, so the choice is even narrower especially when you consider only 1 GSM network is compatible with the frequencies in use elsewhere in the world. In contrast to Europe where you can pick up a phone from a phone reseller who will sell you a contract and a phone at a subsidised price which means there is a vastly larger market for device makers to sell to.

If you look at what currently is available in the US you will see there are only a few WM models available (some on multiple networks) so 10 doesnt really seem that far off.

Exactly. Plus out of the slim pickings that are currently available here in the United States at the moment, a good handful of the devices have been on the shelves for close to a year if not longer. Heck I was in my local T-Mobile store the other day and you could still buy a T-Mobile Dash there.

I would love to see 10 brand spanking new devices. :D

This would have been great news.......... about two years ago.

Now it is just illustrative of how bloated and inept MS is when it comes to WM.

Too bad BillG is not around to light a fire under these guys, but I am not sure he ever got it either.
