Really looking forward on this one. Access would be an interesting addition if available but is it really needed at the PDA level? On the other hand it makes me wonder why Apple hasn't come back with PDA version of IWork.

Access? That's kind of odd. Not that I would discount it's utility, but MS on it's PPC/WM devices hasn't even had it, and very few third party offerings have done it justice. Not to say there aren't DB apps, just not great Access compatible ones. It is a fairly tough product I would think, since you really can't just port the forms, and the tables and queries are fairly cumbersome if you are just using them directly. Syncing was always a challange when you started getting bigger tables, more data and relationships. Maybe that implication in the graphic is wrong, as I see no indication at the artical.

Wonder why PowerPoint is deemed not wanted. While not my favorite app, it certainly seems to be in high demand as something that 'business' users want to at least be able to view.

The original idea behingd the Office apps in WM devices was to allow viewing of the files that came as e-mail attachments, not so much the ability to edit or create them. Wonder how they will provide that feature here.

For these things, I think the only two that are even useful are Word and PowerPoint. Excel MAYBE if your company sends out a lot of stuff in Excel for viewing. Access might be okay on another device as a shared or offline database, but on the iPhone, this is a moot point. But, PowerPoint, that's the real key. Being able to flip through/control a deck while your laptop is in your case (travelling to) or on the desk facing a client was something that made the Palm version worthwhile (okay, only once or twice). Anyway, odd choices.

I can't say I see a great need to edit documents on my iPhone. That silly and so little used capability was part of what kept me on Windows Mobile for far too long. It's been about 2 years since the last time I really needed to be able to edit a document on my handheld. As far as I know, the iPhone comes with capable viewers. Once copy and paste are available in 3.0, that should be good enough for me.

I tried Google docs on the iPhone. I was able to view my documents, but I couldn't find a way to edit them. That would probably get the job done well enough for my uses.

I'm sure once office suites are available for the iPhone, I'll take a look and reevaluate my opinion. Anybody else see this as an asset?

I am also waiting eagerly for a good office suite for the iPhone, I used Quickoffice on a Nokia s60 phone and use Documents to Go now on my WinMo X02HT clone. Office Mobile on a non-touch screen smartphone is too crippled. DocsToGo also states coming soon for Word, Excel & ppt file editing so I'll probably wait. In the meantime, I am playing with a very, very basic program called "Documents" which has a very basic spreadsheet and text editor and can download/upload files to/from Google Docs. There is a free version now also available on the App Store called Documents Free.
