Toshiba has something up its sleeve - that something is the TG01. Some standout features in this upcoming handset include a 4.1" WVGA (480 x 800) touch screen and Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset with a 1GHz core. It also sports 512MB ROM, a microSDHC slot, HSDPA/HSUPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, aGPS, a G-sensor, a virtual trackpad, out-of-the-box DivX support, and a custom touch-friendly GUI, which sits on top of Windows Mobile Professional. And if you think the TG01 looks slim, that's because it is. With a depth of just 9.9 mm or 0.39", it's thinner than the HTC Touch HD (12 mm or 0.47") and iPhone 3G (12.3 mm or 0.48"). See for yourself at Electricpig and Pocket-lint, and expect more details at MWC, which takes place in just under two weeks.

OK... so ... just maybe... 2009 will be a good year for the WinMo platform. This is the kind of thing that we need to get some well deserved attention.

4.1" WVGA screen? I think I'm in love!

Wow...9.9mm thin?? That's amazing - that's almost as thin as the iPod Touch (8.5mm) which is freakishly thin. Nicely done Toshiba, nicely done! :)

I should have waited for this instead of buying Touch HD. I hope this has quad band and US HSDPA.

Very nice looking. This is exactly the kind of thing that could get me excited about WinMo again. The hardware looks great. I've always had a soft spot for Toshiba since I thought their e800 and e830 were two of the best Pocket PC PDAs ever (and they debuted a VGA screen before MS even released an OS that supported it!). I wanted to like the G900 but 3" is just too small for a WVGA screen IMO.
Wonder if (a) it will every come to North America, and (b) it will be reasonably priced with a 2-year contract.

Maybe I'm being a stick-in-the-mud, but the colour selection on the 'Today' screen is just far too 70's for me...
Why couldn't Toshiba have created something a little more professional looking?

Nothing says you have to leave it like that...Ohh the power of Windows Mobile. I'm just concerned it will only come out in Korea or something like that.

Organization :) is so practical with calendar at top of menu that's neatly divided into three categories, and a touch 4.1" (!) screen---Yes!
The sole DISadvantage that I can see here is the wvga screen.

In what way? There aren't many third-party applications that don't support WVGA.

Darius, because I am so in love with my Fuze vga.
The vertical menu categories are so appealingly tailored (to me) in this Tosh device. I wonder whether the touchscreen works as well as the ts on the Fuze? Perhaps I'm a bit colour-starved, too, after the supposedly sophisticated grayness of my beloved Fuze . . .

4.1 WVGA - very nice
1GHz Processor - very nice
512 Mb ROM? - so what? Who doesn't have it this days? How much RAM is more important, and from my experience manufacturers just can't resist to spoil all the fun, I'd say expect minimum, just enough RAM to run OS and crapware.
Size is nice, although I think it is little too wide. but that's O'K
And at last but not least. Will it be retail version or just to show off "see what we can do", and will it be on sale worldwide, or Asian market only, and if it goes on sale than when? I hope before it will become old news, like SE did with Experia.

Wow... 9.9mm?
It's even thinner than my Nokia E71 by a mere .1mm!!!
Now the big challenge would be on battery performance... Will it beat the Nokia E71s two day on a single charge with push email on all day???
We'll see...

Well, yeah, it's certainly not appealing to me either - but I'm sure there will be some colour options. I hope?

From the official video you can see the menu for customising the stripes:

It looks very nice, but there are a couple of questions I have.
First, what’s up with Windows Mobile 6.1? Wouldn’t this be a great platform for WM 6.5?
Second, at the end of video, he sort of held the device in landscape mode, but it didn’t switch to landscape orientation. I wonder if the device doesn’t have a gravity sensor. That would be a shame.

I'm sure it would, but considering WM 6.5 hasn't been announced yet, why would Toshiba be showing it? I think we know what's going to happen though...

Not the point - usability is.
4 inch iPAQ hx4700 = 2.5 by 3.25 (its actually closer to 4.1")
4.1 inch toshiba - 2.2 by 3.75 approx.
web browsing - narrower so tiny text or sideways scrolling which is stupiod. OR shallower os lots of scrolling down.
ebooks, word processing - few words on a line which is less comfortable for reading, or many words and constant scrolling down.
satnav - widescreen means you cannot see as far ahead on your route. Portrait means cramped information and icons - or you cannot fit them all on.

Now I have got to buy micro SD cards and I can no longer view my photos on a screen that is bigger than my camera's (because it uses SD). [Unless of course I buy an adapter, but what do i do with all the SD cards then?]
Camera?
Still, this is the best option so far.

True, but why not delay the announcement two weeks to align with Microsoft announcing WM 6.5? Toshiba would likely have the showcase device there.
Maybe they'll announce a WM 6.5 version (and upgrade?) there, but some of their thunder will have been lost.
If we were talking months instead of days or maybe gearing up for the holiday season, I'd understand that, but this seems slightly premature.
